In preschool and kindergarten, phonemic awareness is beginning to develop, to help encourage this development in all learners, teachers can plan activities that strengthen the phonemic awareness skills of the children in their class. One such activity is phonemic segmentation. This activity would be done in a small group. The teacher will give each child a few small manipulatives, and show them moving them while counting, then the teacher will say a word with three sounds, such as cat, dog, man, etc. She will then ask each student to "sound out" and segment the word into its phonemes. The children will touch their manipulatives while they say "/k/ /a/ /t/." This activity can be augmented to support children at various developmental levels by using the hand signals from "Zoophonics" or starting with single sounds for a child. Learners who are at a more advanced level can do longer words or blended sounds.

Source: Phonological and Phonemic Awareness: In Practice | Reading Rockets. Retrieved Nov 3, 2024, from https://www.readingrockets.org/reading-101/reading-101-learning-modules/course-modules/phonological-and-phonemic-awareness/practice

This series of learning activities includes pairing a sound with a letter and a hand motion, providing multi-sensory learning. This is appropriate for learners of all ability levels because it is fun even for those who are not yet ready to understand it, and it can get much more intricate for gifted learners.

A great classroom activity for fluency for young children is to work on sight words. Sight words help children require less active decoding by memorizing words that may be hard to decode or that they will see frequently when learning to read. This is appropriate for kindergarten students of all ability levels because practicing sight words can be done in a very fun way. There are songs and games that can be done with sight words that will make it fun for kids who may not quite understand it while providing extension activities for children who may be more advanced.

The best thing a family can do to develop fluency in young learners is to read aloud with them. While reading, follow along the words with your finger. You may choose to stop at an individual word here and there and see if your child knows what that word is - this works best with a well known book that you have read many times before.

A great resource for parents and children experiencing homelessness is the local public library. The library is a safe and warm place to spend time. Library cards are free in most places, and they have any book you could want. This supports learners of all levels because you can find many levels of books in the library.

One of the best things families can do to build their children's vocabulary is just to talk to them! Even little babies benefit from their grown-ups simply narrating their activities. As children get older, we can define words for them while reading, take turns describing things, and even have a child write down a word they hear on TV that they do not know and look it up together afterward. Most of these strategies are accessible to all families, including those with language barriers; one way this could apply would be to find a word the child does not know in their home language and to translate it to English after looking it up!

Source: Madalyn, M.

My favorite classroom strategy for comprehension is retelling! In preschool and kindergarten settings, I love to provide props or felt board pieces that accompany the story and encourage the children to tell me the story. The props help them remember the main characters and setting while allowing them the freedom to play with the story a little bit. I will ask questions that lead them to recall the story as well.

A great extension for this activity would be to allow the children to have some free play time with the props and have them make up their own stories about the characters and objects in the story!
