"And what is it that they find in her, such that they no longer find each other, but mirror each other's desire as each turns toward Clare", this was said by Butler and i found it interesting because i think it shows the conflicted feelings Irene experiences through out the story, how it goes from showing interest in Clare then being jelous of Clare. "Clare embodies a certain kind of sexual daring that Irene defends herself against, for the marriage cannot hold Clare, and Irene finds herself drawn by Clare, wanting to be her, but also wanting her", Butler explains. "Therefore, Clare reveals Irene’s subconscious awareness of her inner self and identity. Clare is the "mirror” that reflects an opposing image, or ideal, that creates Irene’s internal conflict." , Chaudhri explains, demonstrating how Clare is Irenes inner thoughts and how Clare lives a life Irene would want to but knows she can't. The author also speaks how Irene uses her skin color to her advantage when she desires but also idolizing her grand morals of not 'passing' since it is wrong.  "Additionally, Larsen emphasizes the hypocrisy of Irene’s criticism of Clare through her actions as a Black woman in the domestic setting", the author Sebright explains. This shows characteristics of Irenes character. Joyce explains Irenes obssesion with comfort and security for herself an dof her family's, and how this drive leads to how she feels for Clare in the end which was death. "Larsen carefully crafted Clare and Irene to act as foils to one another: both are able to “pass”; both are married to men that do not fully accept them; both have different, but intense fears for their children; and, both have complex, and often conflicting, feelings about one another", the author says and i think this would be helpful when writting my essay since Joyce is explains how Irene and Clare are written to have similarities besides one it being different feelings towards eachother and the world.
