I participated in the 'UN SDGs Goals and Human Rights' section at this 13th World Urban Human Rights Forum. In the lecture, Cho Young-sook, CEO of the Gender Education Platform, Hyojae, and Park Cha-ok-kyung, executive director of the Korea SDGs Center, gave lectures. Cho Young-sook talked about SDGs through gender equality, and Park Cha-ok-kyung talked about efforts for SDGs in the region. We would like to learn more about each lecture.

Cho Young-sook saw gender equality as an important agenda for the development of the SDGs and announced three representative issues. First, she talked about freedom from women's violence. She talked about preventing and responding to violence against women, for example, enacting laws that punish violence against women more severely, such as the Special Act on Sexual Violence. The second is to provide capabilities and resources for women. Providing jobs for women or increasing the ratio of women to employ. The third is ensuring opportunities for women's leadership and participation. There are efforts to improve women's leadership in private companies. He said that realizing gender equality through these three efforts helps SDGs.

Cho Young-sook also talked about the social responsibility of unpaid care work. She said there is a need for support for unpaid care workers in society. For example, she said economic support for unpaid care workers, transportation support, and notarization of service hours should be provided so that they can pursue unpaid care work. Such social support will be a great help to unpaid care workers. Next, let's take a look at regional efforts in addition to gender equality

Another presenter, Park Cha-ok-kyung, talked about efforts for SDGs in the region. Local governments' efforts for SDGs are the beginning of the world uniting. For example, Gwangju has made efforts to resolve discrimination against regular and non-regular workers, establish lifelong activities to increase women's participation in the labor market, and guarantee the social rights of migrant workers and their families (especially children). These regional efforts are of great help for SDGs at the global level.

SDGs through gender equality, social responsibility, and local efforts further improves our quality of life, protects people's human rights, and creates an equal society. Knowing about these efforts and making efforts not only at the individual level but also at the national level will help SDGs. This is because each country's efforts for SDGs will eventually become one worldwide.

I think sustainable development through gender equality is important. Gender conflict has been an unsolved task for a long time and there are still people suffering from gender discrimination at this moment. Gender equality requires both efforts at the individual level and efforts at the national level. Only when both awareness improvement and policy improvement are achieved can gender equality be approached. I want to learn more about ways to achieve gender equality.
First, I think it is necessary to improve individual awareness for gender equality. This is because consideration and protection for women eventually begin to improve women's human rights. For example, listening to a lecture on discrimination against women or reading related articles. These efforts will not only keep women from forgetting that they are being discriminated against, but will also give them an opportunity to think about gender equality in their daily lives. In addition to these individual efforts, the efforts of the state are also important.
As CEO Cho Young-sook said in the lecture, the state should first guarantee women's jobs for gender equality. Taking Korea as an example, the time when women's human rights were lowered was when only men worked outside. From this point of view, the point at which women and men work in harmony can be seen as the point at which gender equality approaches. The state must legally balance the employment ratio of women by fixing the employment ratio of men and women. In the case of Korean public officials, the target system for hiring women was implemented to cover 20% of the successful applicants with women. Such efforts by the state will help ensure women's authority and guarantee human rights.
The state must also make great efforts on women's freedom from violence. Representative Cho Young-sook said that laws against women's sexual violence should be established and guaranteed for freedom from women's violence. Guaranteeing these laws will help women's safety. For the safety of women, taking Korea as an example, a homecoming security button was installed on the street, making police come with a push of the button anywhere. This made it safer for women to return home when passing through dark streets or walking around late at night by themselves. These efforts ensure the safety of women.
Due to the efforts of these individuals and the state, there will be a society in which gender evaluation can be achieved someday. Gender equality is still lacking, but it is certain that a lot of effort is being made more than in the past. I don't think gender discrimination should be done if you think that the person who is discriminated against is the daughter and son of a family. Only when gender equality is achieved can we get closer to an equal world.
