A Temperate Forest is often defined as a forest that is found in a temperate region. These forests have fairly consistent temperature and climate around the world, yet can vary. You should definitely visit it in your lifetime! The Temperate Forest is often also called the deciduous temperate forest due to the abundant deciduous trees which leaves fall off each autumn.

The soil of the temperate forest is very fertile. This is due to the leaves that fall onto the soil and decompose. The soil will then absorb the nutrients that were contained within the fallen leaf. The soils of the temperate forest are alfisols. Alfisols are known to be the most fertile forest soils.

Bears are one of the animals found in the temperate forest, and have adapted to the chilling winter temperatures due to HIBERNATION. Because of the freezing cold temperatures, they hibernate instead, which helps protect them from the dangerously low temperatures. Hibernation is the process through which an animal enters a dormant state during the winter.

Opossums also adapt to the forest, as described in the COMMENSALISM example. They don't build their own home, rather use the resources that are around them. They learned to use what is around them.

Mutualism: Lichens and fungi have a mutualistic relationship, in which both help each other obtain the nutrients needed to survive. The fungi will provide support and water to the lichen. In return the lichen will provide with food obtained from sunlight.

Commensalism: An opossum will den with a woodchuck for warmth without harming the woodchuck. The opossum benefits, but the woodchuck is neither helped nor harmed.

Foxes don't always obtain their own food. They will sometimes scavenge the remains of prey that wolves have hunted. The fox waits for the wolf to leave, and then goes in and eats the remains. The fox gets a work-free meal and the wolf isn't harmed, nor benefited.

Parasitism: A tape worm eating another organisms that lives in the Temperate Forest, and the tapeworm is helped, but the animal is harmed.

A mistletoe will burrow its roots in the bark of the tree and it will extract nutrients. This is harmful for the tree, because it causes the death of the tree limbs and even the tree itself.

Deciduous trees in the Temperate Forest grow very broad leaves, which allow for maximum sunlight, considering the competition they have for sunlight. In the winter, there is a series of changes in these leaves that make up for the water loss the broadness of the leaves. This is what causes the leaves of the trees to fall off upon the arrival of fall. Before the fall of the leaves, all are different shades of oranges and reds. The fall is one of the best times to come and visit.

Wildflowers are also grown in the Temperate Forest, before any of the trees. This means that they can get to a desired size and state in their life before they are shaded by the much taller trees.
