Although they can be called 'Sir', modern knights do not have to wear armour, ride horses or fight. It shows knights ready for the mêlée, one of the main events at a tournament. You can see two teams of knights opposite each other and spectators' boxes at the back. The central blue box is for the judges.

Knights were divided into two groups. They would line up on horseback then charge at each other, trying to push them back or break the ranks of the other side.

As the day went on, knights would end up fighting individually or in small packs on foot. They tried to capture knights that they would be able to ransom [exchange for money]. The competition lasted until both sides were exhausted or until it got dark.

After the competition there were feasts and prizes were awarded to the best knight on each side.
