Bossa Nova, which roughly translates to "new trend/wave" is a Brazilian popular music that evolved in the late 1950s in Rio De Janeiro, Copacabana. The genre is a union of Samba (a Brazilian dance and music genre) and Jazz.

The composer Antonio Carlos Jobim and the guitarist João Gilberto are considered the founders of this style.

Instrumentation is varied but in most cases it's kept purposely simple, it is limited to a few rhythm instrument e.g. guitar, berimbau, drum, or a single-note piano accompaniment. This simple approach is to ensure the vocals are a stand out point as it one of the main elements to the genre.

The tone of Bossa Nova is slow and seductive, which is a contrast to most Latin genres that opt for a more energetic sound. Traditionally the lyrics to Bossa Nova are sung in Portuguese and they tend to portray love and the exotic nature of Brazil. However, in the recent year there are Bossa Nova songs both in Spanish and English, but much of the original repertoire has been translated into english for the western audience.

The vocal style is known to be romantic, smooth and intimate as it has a soft touch and is not quite as precise as other genres. when singing in this genre the vocal tone will usually lean towards airy or nasally.
