Mr. President Trump

1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW

Washington, DC 20500

November 22, 2024

Mr. President Trump,

Congratulations on your recent reelection victory this year. Winning both the Electoral College and the popular vote is a significant achievement, and it really shows the trust many Americans have placed in your leadership.

A big topic during your campaign, and one that continues to affect our nation, is immigration. Every day, people arrive in the United States looking for safety, opportunity, and a American dream. However, many face immense challenges immediately upon arrival, especially if they lack documentation. Without legal status, individuals like Mr. and Mrs. "Juan Doe" are unable to access stable jobs, fair wages, or basic protections, leaving them vulnerable to exploitation and poverty. Over time, these circumstances can lead to broader societal issues, as poverty can make any good man a thief and turn to crime out of desperation. But addressing these issues isn’t just about compassion—it’s a matter of protecting our economy and national security.

I believe you have the skills and leadership to address these challenges. One solution lies in reforming our immigration system to streamline legal processes and provide a clear path to legal status for productive, well intentioned, law-abiding immigrants. The New York Times wrote on the issue of immigrants waiting on their court date for the legal process of entry to the U.S "The challenges of dealing with a surge in immigration do not end at the southern border. A yearslong backlog in the nation’s immigration courts has left millions of people in limbo as they wait in the United States for their cases to be heard." Streamlining these bureaucratic processes would allow immigrants in this legal purgatory to contribute positively to the economy while maintaining the integrity of our borders. By ensuring that tax-paying, hardworking immigrants can stay, we would not only reduce crime and poverty but also strengthen our workforce and stimulate economic growth.

Some critics argue that immigrants take jobs away from American workers. However, research disproves this claim. Amy Edelen of Newspaper Source Plus cites economists stating, “Most economists have largely come to the view that immigration is a relatively benign and, in some cases, possibly a positive thing for most countries.” Immigrants tend to fill roles in industries facing labor shortages, mostly agriculture, construction, and hospitality, where employers often struggle to find domestic workers. Additionally, providing legal status to immigrants could logically further boost economic growth, as it allows them to pay taxes and contribute to consumer demand, ultimately creating more jobs. These findings demonstrate that immigration, when managed well, is not a threat but a benefit to our economy.

Improving access to legal entry into the U.S. would reduce illegal border crossings, leading to fewer people being classified as criminals solely for their method of entry. This shift would allow immigrants to focus on working, paying taxes, contributing to society without fear of deportation, eating out at McDonalds like true Americans. Reducing poverty among immigrant populations would likely decrease crime rates as well. The International Journal of Science and Research notes, “Unemployment, limited educational opportunities, and disrupted family structures all contribute to the vicious cycle of poverty and crime.” By pulling out these issues out by the root, we can foster safer and more prosperous communities for everyone.

Mr. President, I urge you to consider this proposal seriously. I know you're the build a wall president but reforming our immigration system could relive the problems faced by millions, strengthen the American economy, and enhance public safety. As a leader who values results, you have the opportunity to address this issue head-on and leave a lasting legacy of pragmatic reform. I hope your second term will go well.

Sincerely,

Mr. American Taxpaying Citizen

P.S. Fixing this TSA-level bureaucracy could also pump up those approval ratings!

Works cited:

Kanno-Youngs, Zolan.
