produce 11 woven samples inspired by photographs from my month- long stay in Ibiza as well as the the yogic hippie lifestyle that so many of the individuals that live in Ibiza have. I’ve taken secondary inspiration from books such as ‘The History of Yoga’ by LIFE Magazine, ‘Be Here Now’ by Ram Dass and a key book of photographs from 1970’s Ibiza Old Town called ‘Ibiza/ Eivissa 1970’ by Jaume Balanya. In addition to this I also found old rave posters from Pacha Flower Power which was the original club that started the rave scene in 1973, followed closely by Amnesia in 1976, and the colours that I extracted from these vintage posters have amplified the kaleidoscopic colour palette that I now have. My intention was to create yoga equipment such as meditation cushions and yoga mats for individuals around the age of 18- 45 that practice yoga frequently and who are looking for a handmade, sustainable alternative to yoga mats and cushions that populate the market. In my visualisation my customer is someone who works part-time in Ibiza as an interior designer, takes care of her own health and her family (if applicable) and uses her free time to go to yoga and meditation classes in the North of Ibiza, but frequents the South in Ibiza Old Town. She chooses to live a laid-back lifestyle by the beach and wants a yoga mat that’s made of majority natural fibres, durable enough for use on the sand and that looks beautiful, influenced by the hippie life in Ibiza that she has always aspired to have. ‘Hippie’ - A free-spirited, loving individual of unconventional appearance associated with a subculture involving a rejection of conventional values, being a moral advocate for peace and love and open to the use of hallucinogenic drugs to heighten their conscience and therefore shaping their outlook on the world.I have also done secondary research into what yoga mats and yoga equipment are selling most at the moment in Ibiza and the most common ones were the pieces which used sustainable materials such as hemp and jute, for example by companies such as Yogamatters and GAIAyoga. Their colour palettes and passion for sustainability stood out to me and made me want to create something similar but with a handmade twist. I researched into using Ibicencan jute and managed to buy some when I was over there, so I incorporated jute into at least 3 of my samples to add the natural fibre into my work to give a textured feel to the mat / meditation cushion. I researched and found that hemp and jute buckwheat meditation bolsters were popular among yogi’s so using natural fibres as well as recycled fibres from previous projects (majority are recycled in my project as a have an abundance of leftover threads at home). Properties of jute: 100% bio-degradable recyclable and thus environmentally friendly, a natural fibre with a golden silky shine, the second most important and widely cultivated vegetable fibre after cotton, high tensile strength with low extensibility. The primary shops I researched into were Yogamatters, Lululemon, Pangaia and GAIAyoga as I admire all of their philosophies for pioneering new biotechnology to create more sustainable fabrics (note most poignantly PANGAIA) and their priority for the wellness and health of their customers- this is the mark I want to make. In addition to this, I wanted to prioritise colour as a means of expressing the energy of the island, so I had to do this through using recycle threads from previous projects as well as deadstock threads for my weft. My favourite one I found online was from Etsy (https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/896074931/recycled-handwoven-mat-for-yoga-pilates?ref=shop_review?ref=reviews) which was handmade out of recycled threads which mirrored what I incorporated into my final samples. As well as using recycled threads I also used fresh alpaca wool which I dyed with hibiscus salt from Ses Salines in the South of Ibiza (Salt Flats in Ibiza- see secondary research in sketchbook). I believe using these threads in my weft from the Ibizan alpaca farm (who also conduct yoga lessons with the alpacas) will touch Ibizan residents and encourage them to buy my samples as it gives a more ethical touch to my work knowing that the animals are being treated well and taken care of.
