How have you seen literacy integrated in other learning areas within the NZC?

I’ve seen literacy integrated with social studies and with art quite a lot. I think teachers find it quite easy to relate the inquiry topic to literacy too. For literacy integrated with social studies it can be quite good to do writing on perspectives and on recounts (from someone else’s life or experience). With art I’ve seen literacy integrated a lot for juniors - reading a book and then doing art based on the illustrations etc.

In which learning areas of the curriculum, is it difficult/ easy to integrate literacy?

I think it's fairly easy to integrate into art, PE, social studies, and science. I think it would be difficult to integrate literacy with maths

What makes these learning areas difficult/ easy to integrate with?

I’m not sure, it might be my personal struggle with math confidence/ creativity with lesson plans that makes me think its hard to integrate

How have you seen literacy integrated in other learning areas within the NZC?

I have seen literacy integrated with almost all other learning areas. I have seen it the most with social studies as it is often a subject with big reading and writing components.

In which learning areas of the curriculum is it difficult/easy to integrate literacy?

I think literacy could be fairly easy to integrate with all other subjects. For example the days writing task could be about a science experiment or a p.e game etc. Maths would be a lot easier in the higher year levels but possibly hard with juniors and middles.

What makes these learning areas difficult/easy to integrate with?

I think Maths is junior might not be complex enough to writing or read a lot about. In the higher levels they are reading longer word problems and writing out longer, more extensive answers.

I haven't seen Literacy integrated into other learning areas (mostly incidental) but I have noticed that it is impossible to learn/experience in other learning areas without literacy. For Literacy to be integrated into a learning area I would expect it to have an intentional purpose with it's own learning intention.

I would think that Physical education would be a challenging learning area to integrate Literacy - unless the focus is on developing vocabulary.

Due to physical education being a 'physical skill' based learning area it may prove challenging to integrate Literacy however in saying that P.E could be planned in a way that students could develop skills and included in the retelling of their experience they could use Literacy.

In my opinion Literacy could be integrated into ALL learning areas but some will be better suited. We just need to be creative.
