Day 1 : Planning and Measurements

Envision: Today we finalized our ideas for this project and wrote it out. We decided on a location upstairs because we will be able to utilize a corner and their is a outlet. Our plan is to black out all the walls and lights to create a night time scenery. We are then going to project a galaxy and make a mix of plants and stars. We are then going to add a quote and a silhouette in the middle. If it doesn't work, we will change the idea to fit the space. We are currently worried about the silhouette but we can fix it as we go. We will continue to learn from our mistakes!
Understanding the art world: We did take a portion of time out of the class to research a variety of ideas from pinterest. Other artists have created galaxies but our idea is more refreshing since we are projecting and also creating a silhouette. We also discussed with our teacher Mrs. Marsh if she had any ideas to help progress our project.
Develop Craft: We started to black out the walls to create a background. A challenge we encountered was trying to cover the whole wall. We took measurements and took this quite a bit of time. Then we had to get a latter so we could reach the ceiling.

Engage and Persist: It is only day 2 and we are already encountering problems. The black out paper which we put on the walls as already fallen off. We decided to use sticky tac instead of painters tape. Hopefully this holds and stays up longer. It is kind of frustrating because I want it to work.
Observe: I have noticed that is is very hard to have complete accuracy when the measurements are large. When we cut the paper, we thought it would be long enough but it wasn't. This meant we had to re cut a new piece. We did use the scraps to cover the floor though! This mistake helped develop our artwork because we were able to use it in a different part of our installation.
Develop Craft: We decided that paper was not the way to go so we are now trying table clothes! There was random black table cloths outside in the hall from DPA so we are going to try them! It is a new technique but I hope it works better!

ENGAGE AND PERSIST AGAIN: This project is really pushing use to use patience. Nothing is really working out right now. For example, we wanted to cover the light above with a dark table cloth to diffuse the light but it moved too much and covered the cameras view point. I'm thinking maybe we can hang a table cloth by hanging it by wire or hooks. The paper is not working so we are going to try and adjust properly.
Envision: We are changing the plan a lot as we go because nothing is working. I keep adjusting our sketch as we change it to help stay organized.
Express: We are really trying to execute our idea to portray a galaxy. Hopefully it will all work out. I am getting anxious because we don't have a lot of time and we have so much to do!
Develop Craft: We went out to AC MOORE to buy new supplies to help with this process. We talked to the employees their about which mediums would work the best. We ended up spending $40 on materials but I defiantly think it will help the overall aesthetic of our project. They told us to use foam balls instead of making the balls because the shape will be better.

Develop Craft: We are encountering a few limitations on the medium we are using. The paper we used to cover the walls IS FINALLY STAYING. The only materials that will hold it is a combination of tape and sticky tac. I'm really happy it is staying because it was stressing us both out last year. We also hung up our planets which we attached using wire. At first, the planets fell off so we decided to connect the wire to the planet with tac. The artwork is finally starting to look cohesive since not everything is not falling off all the time. If we continue with this progression, it should all work out !
Stretch and Explore: We are challenging ourselves by making the project on a bigger scale. We covered 3 walls and it takes up a lot of space which requires more effort and time. We have experienced a variety of mistakes that have pushed to development of my piece. One of the biggest mistakes was our black paper falling. Since it wouldn't stay, we used table clothes to over the walls. THE TABLE CLOTHS WORKED SO MUCH BETTER. We found them from DPA, and it allowed me to cover the whole wall. Another mistake that happened was when we accidentally got tan paint on the one planet. We just went with it and made the planet to have paint splatter. This was an example of a mistake that we turned into a development.
Reflect: The hanging planets really give a sense of depth to our piece but we still have so much to do. So far, I like the fact that we are using 4 different wall spaces. We have learned that everything happens for a reason and that there is alternatives for everything. When something doesn't work, always have a backup plan.

Day 5 : PROJECTIONNNNNN

Understand the Art World: I did some research on other contemporary artisits and how they have used projection in their projects from pinterest. One that was really inspiring was a light installation with shadows of silhouettes. The artist is unknown but I like the idea that they created a room full of projection. I read through articles to find advice AND I found that projection installations only work in very dark environments. This makes me hesitant about using projector in our project.
Engage and Persist: To use the projector we have a few options, we can use a overhead projector or we can use a computer based projector. For the overhead, we tried to print out a transparent and it burned.... we are gonna have to figure what else to do. We might try and print it in black and white and then paint over it. If this doesn't work, we will try and use the computer based projector. The only problem is that it does not cover a lot of space. I tried to create a galaxy and it only covered a tiny portion of the black space.
Stretch and Explore: We are really pushing ourselves to try and cover all walls of the project. We are trying to hang things and make a bigger project. We decided we need to get silver fringe to hang down to enhance the project.

Reflect: Today we hung up silver fringe and it enhanced our project SO MUCH! It is finally starting to look like a project. I like the fact that we are hanging things because it looks more professional. I learned that everything hangs well when you use paper clips and tuck it under the panels. I also learned that to prevent the planets from falling, its helpful to add tac to the wire so it doesn't fall! Constructive criticism has helped a lot because it helps gives us a view of what other people see. People have told us we should add more planets or stars to fill the space more. Last week, someone told us to make the black paper less empty. So, we decided to add silver and gold glitter to the wall and the side wall. It looks very uneven right now and we are going to need to add more layers. Instead of doing separate gold and silver glitter, I feel like we should mix some of it together so it looks more coherent. Additionally, we are gonna plan to create a galaxy out of the glitter.
Express: I feel like we are STARTING to successfully portray our project. It is starting to actually look like a project.

Day 7: glitter

Develop Craft: We decided we needed to add an extra layer of modge podge mixed with glitter to our black paper. It seems uneven so we want it to look more full. Additionally, the modge podge when it tries leaves weird marks on the paper. This is something we learned near the end but it does not distract from the project. It is limited on the amount of materials we can place on it because it will fall off. Near the end of class, I googled proper ways to clean glitter out of paintbrushes because they were packed.
Envision: We decided to tear down our 4th table cloth and move it to the base of our project. The 4th table cloth just seemed in an awkward location and the fringe didn't hang over top of it. It looks a lot better on the floor because it covers the wires of the projection. Our vision for this project is constantly changing and many of the ideas that we had in the beginning are different now. We were gonna create a banner with a quote but we decided we wanted to create a stand with a quote on it instead. Also, we were originally gonna make stars but we weren't gonna hang them in the middle. We changed our minds and we are now going to hang them to fill the space ! We want to make the most of the given space.
Engage and Persist: I am learning A LOT about projectors. We have tired a variety of different projectors but I think our best bet is the one that IS NOT connected to a computer. We printed out an astronaut on a transparent paper and next class we are going to try and see if it works. We printed it out in black and white because the last two times we tried to print it in color, it burned. If we want to , we can paint on top of the transparent to add color but we are unsure yet.

Express: We finally got the projector to work ! Some challenges we are still facing is the fact that it doesn't cover the whole entire wall. Additionally, there is too much light so you can't see the silhouette perfectly. Although there are a few complications, I still really like the effect the projector gives. It adds another element to our piece. I also like the fact that we used an astronaut for the projection. This fits our space theme so well!
Reflect: Our installation artwork has changed so much over the weeks. In the beginning, we were gonna project a galaxy but that didn't work so we deiced to project the astronaut! It is such a better idea and I'm glad we decided to do it. We are almost done with our project and I have learned a lot throughout the process. I learned to be observant about the little things because they can make or break a project. Constructive criticism has helped our project because people's opinions help us to decide what to change. People gave us recommendations to create a sign with a quote or something so that's what we are doing next class!

Observe: I am noticing that we did a good job with covering a large amount of space. We utilized many walls and I feel like this is what help made our piece successful. Last class we noticed that it seemed a little empty so we decided to hang up stars ! This was very simple and we attached them using clear wire. This helped the piece look more cohesive and we decided to make the stars a light brown, yellow color. This color matches our color scheme and fits right in. Lastly, we made a sign today that said "you are a sky full of stars". This helps direct the viewers concentration to the start at the back of the corner and then work your way forward.
