Week 2: Imagine a School by Teach For All

You have explored four classrooms in different contexts. Step back. Consider everything you saw and review your notes. Here's your prompt: 1. If you could design your own school from scratch, what would success look like (and who would you consult to determine success)? 2. What is the look, sound, and feel of the school on a typical day? 3. How would you include metacognition or a focus on agency and awareness? 4. What would the typical methods of teaching and learning be? Answer at least two of those questions and explain why for each. Indicate which questions (Q1, Q2, Q3, and/or Q4) you are answering in your responses. You may answer in any way you wish - drawing, writing, sharing a video or audio file. You may respond in any language you wish. You can add your response by clicking anywhere on the wall or on the pink plus at the bottom right hand side of the screen.

Q1: Erfolg, was ist Erfolg?

I would like to include critical thinking and metacognition to make sure that is a long term investment.
A typical day in this school looks like student has habits and self regulation for deciding to be in a class. The teacher has many ways to facilitate subjects, students are constantly challenged and developing different abilities.

Afterwars we would meditate for a while.
Every teacher needs to make sure the concept of growth mindset is part of every lesson and that they include individual breaks for students when the need them. The students and the teachers (as role models) need to write down their daily goals at the first lesson and need to check and think about their ongoing in the last lesson. For lunch the whole school eats togehter and afterwards are playing some soccer, basketball, are running or are just outside together. But their would also be quite places to be on your own.

My school would be an open places at the afternoons for students and parents to read, study, talk, cook, do sports.....

All in all I think schools need to be a safe and open places for the whole family to support those who are in need.

For me the success is the happiness of children and teachers in schools. |When the children love their school, the atmosphere where the spend the long day has to inspire them. The same is for teachers . The most part of them treat teaching not like an inspiration or responsibility for their students , but a job to earn money and because of low salaries and often lack of respect they are mostly demotivated. Children feel it, they are sure that nobody in school is interested in their achievements, so why to do this or that. The success is that everyone in school realizes how important is their collaboration, love for each other that is the key of co-creating a wonderful world.

Success would be students meeting their goals, as defined after careful consideration with each other. We would consult with staff, students, families.

Typically, classrooms and students are buzzing with a sense of energy, purpose, and fun! Each lesson and class would look different –some quietly working, others in groups discussing, some outside working together on an experiment. Classrooms are safe, welcoming places where students feel confident to step out of their comfort zone, make mistakes and feel valued for who they are. Students are given opportunity to learn and express themselves in a variety of ways, and are given time to reflect on tasks ahead and those completed.

There’d be a feeling of home and close relationships between teachers and students. There'd be a place for every student to self-realize (library, art class, garden, sports-venues, kitchen/cafeteria, science lab etc)
Q3: Learning about growth mindset and reflection would be an essential part of curricula. Almost every activity should be complemented by reflection as long as the activity itself. Kids would learn how to give each other feedback, how to reflect and evaluate their work. At the beginning of the year students would set their own vision and goals that they would be following through the year and presenting at the end of the school year with learning points.

1.	How would you define success and who would you consult to determine success?

I believe success in in any school, including ‘mine’ can be achieved by working collectively with students, teachers, and parents towards a shared vision in our society and culture. The perception should not be ‘us’- teachers and ‘they’- students or parents, but rather ‘we’ together- as it is the case with Maggie’s story for being very ‘precious’ in the Inuit village and engaging parents as in Insilada’s school. Second, the issue of raising awareness of who we are and promoting agency among students- by having them understand that they do matter and they can change-can make students more active not only in their schools but also in the society as a whole. Third, contents should be relevant to students’ world views, otherwise they will not be motivated to learn. Finally, classes should be student-centered where students should be speaking most of the time, not teachers.
Determining success can vary: First, students can fill in a questionnaire or speak about their personal progress, then schools can analyze this success. Second, staff members can evaluate the progress of the academic performance, social skills, engagement in activities, willingness to volunteer, etc. Third, parents can participate in determining whether their kids’ behavior is changing. Finally, professional experts in the education field can help us determine the level of success and reflect on our strategies, so we can refine or reinforce them.

How would you include metacognition or a focus on agency and awareness

Being inspired by Maggie, I will adopt the project-based approach for enhancing agency among my students. The national curriculum often does not satisfy and meet all of our students’ needs. Therefore, developing various projects that can meet students’ needs, society and culture would have a higher impact. On the other hand, this will be more relevant to their lives. The approach can target specific objectives like training young students to be active leaders in the future, to go back to the same community and continue on influencing the others. This leads to a gradual sense of responsibility and in one’s ability to change. Moreover, self-questioning is highly significant and it should not be limited only to classrooms but also questioning ourselves if we contribute enough to our society. I believe, this will lead everyone to contribute more to OUR society.

Q1, 3, 4:
If I could design my ideal school, the learning of the students would be based on what is happening around the students - about their daily lives, the issues they see in their community, their own culture. The students would have assistance to gain background knowledge, then they would go out to their community to observe to identify the topics/ subjects they want to explore. Students would have project-based learning, assigned to different beneficiary (For example, if the students go out to the community and realize that the farmers in their neighborhood are having problems, students would be assigned to groups of farmers to learn about the farming lives, the problems and have hands-on experience to come up with practical and authentic solution for the problems they decide to solve earlier). In the beginning of the project, students would have to set a goal of what they want to learn - both academically (knowledge in the subjects of Math, Biology, Geography, etc.) and personal growth (soft skills of teamwork, organizational skill, and above all, metacognitive skill). In the end of the projects, the students would have self-reflection to acknowledge how much she/he has achieved in terms of the goal set in the beginning, how she/ he would be able to or unable to achieve the goal. There would also be reflection coming from the farmers in this case, from the teachers, or other teammates to see where the students have done well and how can they do better the next time. I strongly believe in the role of parents in raising and educating a child, so parents would definitely be a determinant of success. Parents would be the ones who support the school with helping the children to grow, and the track the change in behaviors of the children and to correct them if necessary.

Because of the hands-on learning experience that is surrounded by what is actually happening around the students' lives, I believe that students will be much more interested and active - physically and mentally - in learning. The teachers will also have a lot of fun and also burden maybe in lesson planning since the lessons would change constantly based on the students and the community. Parents and the community would also actively engage in the learning and teaching process.

Because of the projects the students execute and the ways of execution, students would constantly reflect on their own ability, awareness about what they can do to influence themselves and others around them. They would also develop the love and the bond with their own community because they are the ones who are contributing directly in the development of the community. No one hates the fruits that they grow.

This school
would be an open space and a comfort zone for students which they can express their voices
out in any variety of forms. Everyone in this learning space will all be learners who
learns and grows together.

Q4: One of the typical methods at my school would be reflecting. By the word of reflecting, I
refer to all activities that include the questioning and answering process to rethink, look back,
and review. Then, it would be up to the students to design on how they’d like to express the
thought out, through writing, drawing, or recording. The collection of these reflections would
become a journey of their learning which one day they will look back and learn through their
own growth.

Chayart Kasatepibal
Teach for Thailand

Silent reading, personal writing, mindfulness and physical activity would be built into every day's timetable for all students. Curriculum would reflect the many identities of our cohort and students would be encouraged to understand the historiography of majority narratives and question these. The most important measure would be self-reported improvements against self-identified goals.
3. Self assessment and goal setting are both metacognitive strategies. Personal writing time or exit tickets could be used to have students consider the lesson's content or approach from their own worldview/identity.

It would full of details that make everyone feel comfortable. There were enough recreating zones ( quiet for reading and loud for the plays and talking), free access to healthy snacks and water. There were different light and bright colors inside, the open space for meditation or other activities outside. There would be the sound of a laugh, chilling talks and studying discussion. There would be noisy outside, where student expresses their energy and feelings in movement, sports games, and dances. There would be quite noisy inside, where students and teachers share their thoughts with each other.
There would be the space for creativity: for painting on the walls and floor and the space for the reflection (that plays the vital role in the class), where everyone can paint or write their feelings or ideas after the lessons. That would help all the participants of studying possess to improve their feeling of awareness and share it with others.

I also would like to full school with some traditional symbols that identifies the communities' culture. But, I see it in some modern and cosmopolitical conception. I also would like that children and teachers were the creators of the school space making it in a metacognitive way: understanding the benefit of their steps, setting the goals and analyzing the results.

We would have students work on posters and growth mindset sentences across the walls; places for students get together and work on their clubs or projects; a nice place so they could exercise and play. Our school would be colourful, would have a nice song to indicate the time of beginning and ending of classes. Everyone would be happy of being there, bought staff ant teenagers.

Q4: We would work with project based learning strategies, with both theoretical and practical classes. I think that this way, children would be able to use their creativity, learn how to work in groups and apply their knowledge in a real-world context. Also, I would have all teachers studying metacognition strategies to use in their classes. I would bring the community to school in order to improve student performance and engagement.

My school will look like this- the chidlren are having experiential Learning environment. They are independently sharing their thoughts and feelings. Those are valued also. Agency can be taken care by hands-on experience in the classroom. Learning by doing is the best way. Then sharing platform is important. Awareness through exposure to the community projects and reflection session. School should inculcate the culture of reflection. Building a core value and true characters should be the motto of my designed school. Teachers need to use well prepared lesson plans. While making the lesson plans they have to keep their students in their mind. School should have all the facets starting it from LSRW ... gross motor skills development... Plus the personal social imotional development zone

How would you define success and who would you consult to determine success?

For the sake of this activity, let’s assume we live in a world where academic standards are reliable, valid, well-paced, and well-delineated, all while being customizable for local context (huge assumptions, I understand). Ideally, success would be defined by the learner themselves -- according to their needs, aspirations, struggles, and modes of thinking -- in consultation with their teachers, parents, and peers. Great classrooms deftly balance the group and the individual, among many other things; the same applies to how I’d try to define student success in a brand new school.

What is the look, sound, and feel of the school on a typical day?

Instead of segmented by subjects and grade levels, my school would be organized foremost according to the needs of students and the surrounding community. The challenges that students and communities face are complex, gnarly, and hardly subject-specific -- a school’s structure should cater to this reality. Grouping students by interest and/or experience, organizing project teams guided by teacher leads, encouraging students to get out into the community to gather insights, partnering with local employers, developing authentic opportunities for students to display their learning (e.g., project team presentations), formative assessment and structured moments for student reflection against learning goals -- these are just a few of the structures that might dictate how the school looks, sounds, and feels.

My school would focus on creativity/ innovation and building global citizens who will create a fairer, brighter, and more sustainable future for everyone. I would see students prepare for their role as future leaders by designing their intedisciplinary projects to solve current problems and create new innovations. For example, might students might decide that they want to work on solving our planet's plastic pollution crisis. In order to embark on this project, they would need to determine what they know and don't know, which may lead them to research the science behind how plastics are created, or study how economics influences the demand for plastic. As a collaborative team, they would learn together, teach each other, and experiment with solutions together. They would challenge each other to explore the ethical and moral implications of their innovation solutions and think critically about the impact that their solutions might have on local communities. In my school, we wouldn't have 'subjects;' we would have 'challenges' and 'opportunities' that would naturally lead to learning specific knowledge, skills & mindsets. The curriculum would be student-driven and students would evaluate & reflect their own efforts and whether or not they are truly developing a fair, brighter and more sustainable future.

Relationships would be the main focus, as being able to move comes more naturally if the settings are right.

Learning in my school would be largely project-driven. Students would work on large projects and learn many different skills while at it. In addition they would have time for individual work and focusing on math and reading. There would be many options for reading, as well a large library. Students would be able to discuss their reading often, and the rooms in which they read would be super cosy. It would be a well known fact that one needs to chew themselves through a lot of books to expand their mind, as well as to create something valuable in groups, to develop active change-making skills.

While direct instruction has its scientifically proven benefits, I have seen firsthand on a small scale that students' retention and accomplishments are much larger when they take an active part in their own learning. This is why I believe that students with the help of teachers in the role of mentors and facilitators are more able to succeed and to reflect on their own process of learning. This is where their success will be defined - I believe that students should be part of the process that crafts criteria for success and if I had a school, these criteria would be universal and shared with everyone. These criteria should concern subject knowledge as well as skill development and emotional intelligence. I'd consult with other teachers, students, parents to craft criteria for success.

Q1. How would you define success and who would you consult to determine success?
Success are students excited about learning, willing to develop themselves in variety of aspects (knowledge, arts, movement, creativity, practical skills). In school there is learning atmosphere, and every teacher and staff member is part of it, having their own learning plans and sharing them with students. Students having impact on learning process creates atmosphere of belonging, owning the school, but strong set of values supports having system to deal with disciplinary cases (doing it in a supportive way).

Q2, Q4: What is the look, sound, and feel of the school on a typical day? What would the typical methods of teaching and learning be?
Kids are working in mixed ages groups. There are no classes, but there is four levels: 1st is about developing basic skills (1-4th grade level) as reading, counting, multiplying, dividing. It's a lot learning through games. Whenever needed skill set is developed, there is "exam" and group or kid is moving into next level. Second level is about learning all the school stuff, and learning together in peer groups, third level goes more into detail in subject area and each kid is learning to lead group and classroom. Every kid is learning to teach and works on developing subject. This level finishes with state exams whenever student is ready for them. Forth level is optional. It's space and time for student to try on specialty he chooses, dive deep in specific knowledge and develop idea he has with support from school stuff members.

Let's say, I am level 3 student. I come to school in the morning, meet my class of around 16 students. We have math week, so, we start off with math lesson. It goes through math classification and different sub-fields of math (algebra, geometry, trig) during the week. As we have learned it in the level 2nd, now our group is working on complicated, complex problems and preparing to teach this math course to 2nd level group. Between Math lessons we have movement and creative lessons. We have creative subject daily (visual art, music, sawing, handicrafts) and two movement lessons daily (dance, parkour, self-defense and other). When head is tired from math, we switch it with creative subject or movement. We have longer school day than in State schools, but it's highly-paced, balanced rhythm helps us to go through day with joy and ease. We also see "why" to do more, because when we learn in such a speed, we finish regular school classes in less years than in ordinary schools. We actually choose our own learning pace. We also learn to teach, to be responsible for others and ourselves.

P.s. I wrote it in "it is" form just because it's going to be here and now soon.
