Immense economic drain of extra-planetary colonization is an extractive economic basis causing severe social, cultural, and economic crises on Earth; parallel issues with the extraction model of European powers during African colonization.

We need to prove that we can be better stewards of the world we inhabit before we mess up other planets/moons etc...

Some other awesome reasons include:

1) Enormous amounts of resources ripe for the taking (asteroids, for example).

2) Plenty of space for people to live as they wish (Don't like someone's politics or religion? Leave and go somewhere else!).

3) Technological developments required will change human society for the better in unimaginable ways.

4) A long time from now the Sun will die, killing everything that ever was on Earth. That's bad, mmk?

• Religious motivations can be traced all the way back to the Crusades, the series of religious wars between the 11th and 15th centuries during which European Christians sought to claim Jerusalem as an exclusively Christian space.

• As Crusaders experienced the feel of silk, the taste of spices, and the utility of porcelain, desire for these products created new markets for merchants.

• A thirst for glory: European competition for global dominance

  Competition between the Portuguese and the Spanish motivated both nations to colonize quickly and aggressively.

For God: We will avoid the pitfalls of Pocahontas and Avatar because there are no other populated planets in our solar system. No need to use "colonize" as a dirty word.

For gold: We are running out of resources on Earth. We are as "land-locked" as the Europeans were and our populations are too high. We need to expand to other planets to gain space and resources. This will help our quality of life as the human race.

For glory: Space is the final frontier. There is glory and greatness in being able to tame outer space and start from scratch on a challenging new planet. Whatever we accomplish in space colonization could at the very least provide discoveries to help those still on earth in the same way that the Space Race furthered technology in the 1900s.
