Description: Times New Roman is a serif typeface. It was used by the British newspaper The Times in 1931 and conceived by Stanley Morison, the artistic adviser to the printing equipment company Monotype, in collaboration with Victor Lardent, a lettering artist in The Times. It is one of popular roman typeface.

History:
Times New Roman was designed in 1931, and made its debut in The Times on 3 October 1932. In 1933, the design was released for commercial sale. The Times stayed with Times New Roman for 40 years. In the following decades, 1972-2007, due to changes in technology and format, The Times changed fonts five times. However, all new fonts are variants of Times New Roman. Now, due to the huge range of characters available for international and mathematical printing, Times New Roman is still very popular in publishing.

Design:
As a typeface designed for newspaper printing, Times New Roman has a high x-height, short descenders to allow tight linespacing and a relatively condensed appearance.
A number of early reviews of Times New Roman were published in Morison's lifetime that discussed aspects of its design. Most were appreciative (Morison was an influential figure in publishing) but several noted that it did not follow conventional expectations of newspaper typeface design.（During that period, many people commented on Morrison’s work, and most of them expressed appreciation, but some people felt that his work did not follow the traditional expectations of newspaper font design.）

What interests me: This is the first font I collected, because it is a required font in the MLA format. I wrote many essays in this font in high school, so it left a deep impression on me. Also, I am wondering Why is it chosen among so many fonts to become the one in MLA format? Is it the most official font?

site: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Times_New_Roman

And it is one of the major typefaces in the history of Western typography. Blackletter is the oldest typeface style.

History: Blackletter was used by the whole Western Europe from about 1150 to the 17th century. It continued to be commonly used for the Danish language until 1875, and for the German language until the 1940s. in the 1500’s, Blackletter became less popular for printing in many countries except Germany and the German speaking countries, because it is difficult to read as body text. It continued to be commonly used for the Danish language until 1875, and for the German language until the 1940s. As already mentioned, people later found Blackletter is best used for headings, logos, posters and signs. It also used in certificate, diploma or degree. Other familiar sightings include newspaper nameplates where it may be considered the font lends gravitas to the publication.

Design:
Gothic writing forms reflected the Gothic spirit and aesthetic, which is the vertical supplanted horizontals as the dominant line in architecture; the pointed arch replaced the round arch of the Romans; the almond shape, or Mandorla, was preferred.

What interests me: I like this font very much because it is not as neat as most fonts.

Description: In Latin script typography, there are three main kinds of historical type roman, blackletter and italic. This font is based on a stylised form of calligraphic handwriting. When handwriting, the characters always tilt to one side, so the feature of this font is slant slightly to the right.

History:
Italic type was first used by Aldus Manutius and his press in Venice in 1500. Then, Italic type was first used by Aldus Manutius and his press in Venice in 1500. The evolution of use of italic to show emphasis happened in the 16th century and was a clear norm by the 17th.

Design:
Manutius intended his italic type to be used not for emphasis but for the text of small, easily carried editions of popular books, replicating the style of handwritten manuscripts of the period. The choice of using italic type, rather than the roman type in general use at the time, was apparently made to suggest informality in editions designed for leisure reading.

What interests me: When I do the research of my first two elements, this font was mentioned many times, like they are three brothers. So I decided to select this as one of my element to get a deeper understanding.

3 connection: historical, designed, function?

site: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italic_type

Description: Seal script is a kind of strong pictographic style. It's also the font before official script, so there are many similarities with the official script.

what interests me: Every word in this font is not only a character but also like a painting, a combination of calligraphy and painting. Maybe this is the charm of hieroglyphs.

3 connection: connect to art, historical style, designed.

By collecting these fonts and their three taxonomies, I have a deeper understanding of them and saw more possibilities between different text fonts and art. The knowledge of font history allows me to have a deeper thinking when choosing a font to use in the future, such as its origin and historical use, not just its appearance. The research on its design ideas and process allowed me to better understand the suitable use of this font. What's more, through the use and innovation of these fonts by different artists in their works, they reordered, deformed, and materialized the fonts, which inspired me a lot.
