<description> Encanto is a movie about a family who gains magical powers after a tragic historical event. Each member of the Madrigal family is granted their magical abilities at the age of five; all but Maribel. Many years later on Maribel&#39;s nephew&#39;s fifth birthday, the family and town gather once again for the magical ceremony. Maribel discovers that there is something wrong with the magic but she is the only one who knows. She must find the missing pieces to heal what is broken and save her family. In this review, I analyze how the women&#39;s powers, construct their gendered expectations. Special attention is paid to how their powers mirror their gender performance and also how this changes throughout.
