(13)World's Largest Offshore Windfarm

Story Summary
The largest offshore windfarm in the world will be built about 20 km off the Scottish coast. According to the Norwegian energy company Statoil, which will operate the the windfarm, turbines will generate about 30 megawatts of electricity through wind power by the end of 2017.
While wind turbines on land stand on massive concrete and steel foundations, building them in the open sea is quite a challenge. Existing wind turbines in the ocean have all been anchored to the ocean floor, which can only be done in shallow water. Statoil's new turbines will be fixed to a steel tube that floats in the water. With this new technology it will be possible to make use of wind power in deeper waters.

Read the article
https://www.english-online.at/news-articles/technology/worlds-largest-offshore-windfarm.htm

What is the main idea of the article?
Statoil has wind turbine technology that generates approximately 30 megawatts of electricity through wind power.

What did you learn from the article?
Yes, I learned about new technologies that can use wind energy to generate more than 30 megawatts of electricity and learned new words about wind turbines.

Do you recommend the article to your classmates?

Story Summary
For the first time, global fishing activity has been tracked from space. The data collected shows that 55% of the world's oceans are used for commercial fishing, four times the area that is used for farming. In contrast, fish provides only 1.2% of the world's food.

Read the article
https://www.english-online.at/news-articles/technology/worlds-fishing-fleets-tracked-from-space.htm

What is the main idea of the article?
Data collection and tracking of fishing activities from around the world. The top fishing countries are China, Spain, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan.

Story Summary
A British project to build the world’s fastest car is underway. The Bloodhound car will be constructed to reach speeds that nobody has ever dreamed of. The project has the aim of teaching young people science and mathematics. Richard Noble, project director, was already head of the 1997 project that set up the current world record. Over 4,000 primary and secondary schools in Great Britain are talking part in an educational program that is a part of the project. It should inspire school children to study more science and math. Richard Noble has asked volunteers to help in the project. Currently a track is being prepared by 300 people in the Northern Cape Province in South Africa. It must be flat and without any obstacles. Otherwise the car may be damaged by a rock or something else that might hit it.

Read the article
https://www.english-online.at/news-articles/technology/worlds-fastest-car-to-reach-1000-mph.htm

What is the main idea of the article?
A British project to build the world’s fastest car is underway. When Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull erupted in May 2010 it sent volcanic ash clouds across most of Europe.
