During this time Harriet was already a slave since the age of five or six. While one day she was trying to help a fellow slave escape their punishment she was struck in the head with a 2 pound weight intended to hit the other slave and it broke her skull . After being struck she went back to her enslavers house and stayed there without help for two days even though she was bleeding and unconscious. After that she had a major surgery and suffered from after effects for the rest of her life.
