2. Encourage your child to practise arithmetic questions (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division), focusing on speed and accuracy. You can create word problems together or practise mental maths with everyday scenarios.

3. Ask your child to explain their thinking when solving problems to improve their reasoning skills. Encourage them to work through practice papers or online quizzes to build confidence with SATs-style questions.

In Summer 2, we will engage in project-based tasks that bring together many of the operations learned throughout the year. These tasks will focus on real-life applications of mathematics, such as measurement, data collection and budgeting. They will work on applying their knowledge to solve problems in practical and creative ways.

2. Encourage your child to read a range of texts e.g., fiction, non-fiction, poetry, newspaper articles.

3. Discuss books that you are reading with your child. Make predictions and ask lots of questions.

To deepen their understanding, the children will link their reading to other areas of learning, including studying animals found in the Galápagos Islands and exploring characteristics of remote island adventure stories. They will also learn more about historical figures mentioned in the book, such as Queen Victoria, helping them build a richer understanding of the historical context behind the story.

Throughout their reading, the children will focus on developing key comprehension skills, including making predictions, forming inferences, and retrieving key information from the text. These skills will support them in demonstrating a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of what they read.

2. Ask your children to retell the model text regularly.

3. Quiz your child on the features of the toolkit. As a challenge, see if your child can find any of these features in any of the books they're reading.

Our learning will focus on how to create effective action writing, building upon action toolkits developed in previous years and applying a range of grammatical features we have explored throughout the year. Action texts are pieces of writing that focus on exciting events, movement, and fast-paced action, designed to make the reader feel like they are “in the moment” with the characters. In Year 6, action texts help children practise writing that is vivid, gripping, and keeps the reader engaged. The children will learn how to build tension, describe fast-moving events, and use carefully crafted language to bring action scenes to life.

2. You can support your child with their learning of Ancient Greece by reading and discussing some Greek myths.

2. You could help your child research Greek inventions and how they still impact us today or visiting museums or exploring Greek art and architecture can also bring the topic to life.

2. Encourage your child to practise mindfulness on a regular basis. This could include slow, gentle breathing exercises, listening to calming music or sounds etc.

In RE, Year 6 will be looking at Christianity and discussing the question: Is Christianity still a strong religion over 2000 years after Jesus was on Earth? They will look at important Christian festivals, how Christianity is followed today and how modern Christians feel about their religion.

PSHE:

In PSHE, the children will be looking at mental health and ways to promote positive habits which will improve it. We will also discuss grief and power within relationships, ensuring we know how to manage these tricky situations. Year 6 will also look at using technology responsibly.

We will also be finding out about the work of palaeontologists such as Mary Anning, Charles Darwin and Alfred Wallace.

Our final question we are building up to answer is: How has your chosen animal adapted to its environment?

In their second PE lesson each week, children will take part in problem-solving activities. The focus of this learning is to explore what makes an effective team, with particular emphasis on collaboration and communication. Pupils will also consider why motivating and supporting each other is so important when working towards a shared goal.

With Sports Day approaching in the Summer term, Year 6 will also have opportunities to practise and prepare for their events. They will develop their confidence, resilience, and team spirit as they work together and get ready to take part in this exciting whole-school event.

This term, we will focus on developing the children’s ability to perform to a wider audience with confidence and expression, while demonstrating a clear understanding of style and phrasing. The children will work on key skills including posture and breathing, maintaining beat and rhythm, accurate pitch, clear diction with attention to vowel sounds and resonance, expressive performance with appropriate style and phrasing, and singing in harmony.

Art: As children begin to think about their transition to secondary school, they will be creating a personal memory box using a collection of found objects and hand-sculptured forms, reflecting primary school life with symbolic and personal meaning.

DT: During summer term, the children will be designing a playground featuring a variety of different structures, giving consideration to how the structures will be used. They will consider effective and ineffective designs and build a range of play apparatus structures drawing upon new and prior knowledge of structures.

Beyond the classroom, many pupils took part in a wide range of clubs, competitions, and talent shows, showcasing their skills and enthusiasm. We also marked several important celebrations, including Ramadan, Eid, Holi, Lunar New Year and Easter. It has been wonderful to see our school community come together to recognise and celebrate the rich diversity of cultures within it.

Reading continued to be a key focus, with events such as the Readathon, Book Fair, World Book Day and China's World Book Day assembly. The children showed great excitement and engagement throughout, and we hope this enthusiasm continues to foster a lifelong love of reading.

Last term in science, Year 6 pupils took part in an exciting heart dissection workshop as part of their learning about the circulatory system. During this hands-on session, the children carefully examined a real heart, making small incisions to explore its internal structure. They were able to identify key features and gain a deeper understanding of how blood flows through the heart. It was a fascinating and memorable experience that truly brought their learning to life.

2. Encourage your child to talk about their memories and help them gather small, meaningful objects from home that represent their primary school experiences, which they can include in their memory box.

3. Ask your child to observe playgrounds in real life or online, discussing which equipment works well and why, to help them think more carefully about their own designs.
