Anesthesiologists care for patients before, during, and immediately following a medical procedure. They are responsible for administering anesthesia in the appropriate doses. During procedure, anesthesiologists monitor vital signs and make adjustments to anesthesia. After a procedure, they may be involved in management of pain.

A minimum of 12 years of post-secondary education is required to become a board-certified anesthesiologist. Firstly, you must become a fully qualified physician and then complete residency requirements. "While there is no official pre-medical degree required for medical school, many baccalaureate degree programs are geared toward preparing graduates for medical school. Whether it carries the pre-medical label or not, a 4-year degree, preferably in natural sciences, is required to gain admission to an accredited medical school. All students must graduate from a four year MD. Certification depends on branch of anesthesiology, e.g. Critical Care Medicine Certification. The average salary of an anesthesiologist is $343,000.

Work Environment and Schedule

Most anesthesiologists work in hospitals and outpatient surgical centers. Others may work in private practice, urgent care, or the military. One third of anesthesiologists work 60+ hours a week. Most anesthesiologists are up by 5:30 am-6:00 am and are ready at the hospital for the first patient consultation at &;00 am. They are usually done with work between 4:00 pm and 5:00 pm.
