Creating a Podcast

In the classroom, I often find that I can get in a rut of having the students create an iMovie or PowerPoint for everything under the sun. This becomes quite tedious and it loses it's spark. I love the idea of creating Podcasts using Garage Band that can be posted on blogs to showcase projects and learning. This is a technology that is very relevant to students and something they would love to use to bring their personality, creativity, and thinking skills to the public arena through publishing.

Sorry, I went back to check the title and it wouldn't let me edit my first post!

Anyway, I really liked the Grade 6-8 Language Arts example for Magazine Publishing. I liked how the students had to do every job that a real magazine would require, including finding local companies to advertise. This project would give students the freedom to include content of interest and work on tasks they enjoy while also teaching them useful ELA skills and potential career skills related to technology, marketing, writing, etc. Very fun and practical.

The idea for using a computer game to create a city and teach students about environmental impact is very creative. In fact, a lot of these projects incorporate group work and the use of technology while simulating actual career tasks. This not only makes the school work interesting to the students, but applicable to real life. It truly is a redefining stage of tech use.

I try to use different websites and technology to help middle schoolers in their language learning, but so many programs and projects out there are too linguistically advanced for ESL learners. Most of the times, I end up substituting activities with tech use. At most, I get to the augmentation level, but low language levels sometimes makes modification and redefinition very challenging.

Goal-Directed Transformation?

I looked at the 6-8 ELA project called "Puppy Mill". I se how it was transformational in that students not only needed to interview someone, but then had to put together a whole video/movie about the research they did and include parts of the interview. I wasn't sure, however, what the actual goal was for the project. It seemed like this could also fit well into the Authentic category. I like that students get video editing skills along with improving their interpersonal speaking.

Video Game Design - MS

I like how even though it is aimed at LA, it also demands high level technology skills. It enhances creativity, collaboration, problem solving and it is highly engaging for students. That's something I´m planning to include in my class this year. However, my issue with this is that I have yet to find a video game design app that is not incredibly hard nor boring-easy. I would have loved for them to say which Video Game design software they used- they don´t mention it.

Grade Level: K-2
Technology Level: Transformation
This class used PowerPoint, videoing, and Windows Movie Maker to share information about the animals they had researched. It is amazing to see Kindergarten students working in such capable, confident ways. They are obviously comfortable with this way of learning, and the technology has enhanced their learning and their ability to share their learning in ways that would not be possible without the technology.

I do like the public service announcements and want to try in Chinese class. At first, students need to use google, yahoo to do research. They get to read a lot of Chinese paragraphs. It's good for their reading skill. Then they need to take notes and summarize. It's good for their analytical ability. At last they can use iMovie or other software to do presentation. It's good for their speaking skill. If they work as a team, they can also get trained on team-building skill. It's an excellent activity for students to improve various abilities.
