The reason someone may wish to use a firewall is to prevent unwanted connections from accessing their computer, in order to protect the data on their system from being accessed by unauthorised users and to prevent unwanted data from being installed onto their system.

Firewalls help to keep systems secure by preventing hackers from accessing a system as easily. Files and connections that access a system with a firewall are checked before they are allowed to commence, and if they attempt to connect on a port that is closed or with a file that is regarded as malware, the connection is blocked and the system is protected.
