How did love affect the eventual demise of Romeo and Juliet?

DEEKSHITA

I think one of the people to cause the death of romeo and juliet was Romeo and Mercutio.

Mercutio is the Prince's kinsman, but more importantly, he is Romeo's friend.

Mercutio's is always conserned about Romeo and fought for peace between the two families. Mercutio is the first to see that Romeo is deeply in love.

Proof: In Act 2, scene 1, Mercutio calls for Romeo by saying, "Romeo! Humors! Madman! Passion! Lover!" He then says, "my invocation is fair and honest, in his mistress' name…." Mercutio expresses his concern to Romeo. He does not want Romeo to marry Juliet, because he knows this will stir up trouble between the 2 families.

So he tries to convince Romeo that his love will only cause problems and in the end, things will not work out. Romeo doesnt listen to Mercutio .Because he is in Love and juliet has already overcome him and controls all of his thoughts and actions. This love prevents Mercutio from saving Romeo and keeping peace between the families.

In Act 3, scene 1, Mercutio fights Tybalt on behalf of Romeo. Romeo attempts to break the fight, but Tybalt stabs Mercutio. when he is dying, Mercutio says, "A plague o' both your houses!”. It is after Mercutio's death that Romeo realizes what will be the consequences of his love affair with a capulet. Romeo kills Tybalt, which in turn, leads to his banishment and eventual death. Romeo says in line 135 of the same scene, "O, I am fortune's fool." Mercutio was correct . The love between Romeo and Juliet ends up being a tragedy for both families.
Mercutio's character is important in driving the action forward in this play. He foreshadows the devastating events, serves as Romeo's friend, and gives the audience important information throughout the play. Mercutio's death is the turning point in the play. For all of these reasons, Mercutio maight as well have been the cause of their death.

Paris doesn't really "love" Juliet. He is only there to be a antagonist for Romeo.

He may love her but it is not love that will develop throughout the story line, unlike romeo and Juliet. It is comparable to the "love" between Romeo and Rosalind in the beginning of the play/movie.

Also in the part of the plot when Romeo is exiled from Verona Juliet gets more and more pressure from her parents to marry Paris, this gets even more complicated when Mr. Capulet gives his word to Paris to marry him to Juliet. Her continued objections and rebelling leads her father, mother and even her nurse leaving her and not supporting her. This may not be the romantic love of Romeo and Juliet but this is her family and Juliet does have a love bond with them, even the nurse who has always stood by her.

This in turn also could have led to Juliet's depression and willingness to kill herself. This then also set the plan in motion that got Romeo and Juliet killed in the end.

In the play the audience is not actually introduced to the character Rosalind. The only thing the audience knows about her is that she was the "love" of Romeo before Juliet.

I think that she was symbolic of Romeo's youthfulness and naiveness at the beginning of the plot. This is also shown through his speech, he talks about Rosalind by reciting lines. This also gives him space to improve a lot from his youthful talking to a more mature person, his language changes over the course of the story and he starts to speak more from his heart, instead of reciting texts. He also starts to be more in love, like actual love compared to his idea of being in love before with Rosalind.

He also says that with his love Juliet's family won't be an obstacle for him.

This shows just how naive Romeo can be, he doesn't think about the possible consequences of him chasing after Juliet and his love for her. He is in fact blinded by love, however sweet or romantic he is being.

Eric:

I haven't really read or watched anything related to Romeo and Juliet and have only seen short adaptations of William Shakespeare's plays. Of course I knew the play and how famous it was for it's dramatic and violent love but it was never appealing enough for me to read it, especially because of it's "old" writing style. However I changed my mind after reading about 3/4 of the book, I realised just how impressive and special this play was. It wasn't just the amazing word play and the double meanings of words or the phrases but also how they could almost use English, but a almost mutated English and make it sound so fluent. At a certain point I was really impressed with how Shakespeare wrote it, using clever word play and expressions to say something that can be easily said dramatic and romantic.

Ayesha:

At the beginning of this unit when we were told we were reading Shakespeare Romeo and Juliet, I thought it as just another over dramatic love story. I did respect the fact that it was a very famous play, written by shakespeare, a famous writer who is considered the greatest writer in the English language. I also thought Romeo and Juliet was going to be hard for me to understand, since it is written in old english. Indeed in some parts of the book and movie it left me confused. I would have never decided to read Romeo and Juliet if it wasn't mandatory. But I do regret thinking this because after reading the book and watching the movie I realised that this play is a piece of ancient art, which you can learn many things from. It facinated me how the words and sentences in Romeo and Juliet had such deep meanings. I loved analysing scenes from the play because it made everything so much clearer.

Laila

When we got told what we had to do at the beginning of the unit, I thought we were just going to read the book and it was going to be one of those obvious love stories. I already knew that Romeo and Juliet were going to die, but I didn't know how they died or how the story was plotted. When I we were watching the movie and reading the book I was quite suprised how everything happened and I didn't know that is was so sad.

I think that the love in this story extends far beyond the love which Romeo and Juliet feel for each other. All of the characters in the play talk about love and they have different interpretations of what it is.

Mercutio thinks that love makes a man dumb and weak. Lady Capulet thinks that love is based on material things. For example, Lord Capulet sees love as a duty and an obedience. Friar Laurence knows that love is passionate but he also argues that it is a responsibility. Lastly, Paris thinks that love is at his command since he told Juliet that he loved her

The prologue is one of the most important parts of this play because is opens the scene so that we know what is going on, It also presents the theme of Love and hate because without the prologue we would not know that there are two families which have a rivalry. The theme of love is presented early on in the play, we can see that the two families (Capulet, Montague) hate each other. Therefore Romeo and Juliet are supposed to hate each other but as soon as Juliet meets Romeo and finds out that he is a Montague, she knows that she is supposed to hate him but she loves him no matter what his name is.

1:5;21

"My only love sprung from my only hate!

In my opinion shakespeare portrayed the love between Romeo and Rosaline to be "Fake" and not genuine I think this because, even though we are not introduced to her, I think that Romeo is just feeling self pity because of the rejection from Rosaline. I also think that he is not genuinely in love with Rosaline because I think he is more in love with the idea of being in love rather than actually really being in love, this idea is well put by Friar Laurence when he says "young men's love lies not truly in their hearts,
but in their eyes".

"let them find me here" He doesn't consider the possible consequences of the families finding out.

He then continues to dramatise it even more by saying; "My life would rather be ended by their hate... wanting for thy love" He again shows his not-so-rational thinking and devotes himself even more to his one and only love.

To conclude my analysis I will say that William shakespeare is a genius with words. You have to understand the words in depth to actually find the hidden meaning inside,It can also represent something more that just what it is for example the sun and the moon. They always met at night this fells like its supposed to be kept secret.Once they do come out in light it means the relationship is out in the open. The theme love overall is a very hard topic to analyse as there are so many versions of love, everyone's ideas on love is different. But this has helped in going into depth and analyse the different themes of love.

A classic is a story with a timeless theme that people can relate to even hundreds of years later, such as the theme of love. The most famous timeless theme in Romeo & Juliet is love, even though the story was written 400 years ago people can still relate to it, even if not with the same consequences as in this particular play. Like all classics, Romeo and Juliet is a play which people from any time period can relate to.

Different Types of Love in Romeo and Juliet (called it)

Romeo & Juliet presents the theme of love in different ways, such as parental love, idealistic and love between friends. For example the love between the nurse and Juliet is parental love because Lady Capulet was never there for Juliet. This is what usually happened in the elizabethan era, the mother would give birth and then she would hand the baby over to the nurse to take care of it, this was a usual practice then. Idealistic love would be the love between Romeo and Juliet, idealistic love is the love which people hope for, so the perfect love (love that conquers all and solves your problems and makes everything okay), this is the type of love presented between Romeo and Juliet. Realistic love, on the other hand, is love which you actually get. So it is not a hope or a dream it is reality, hence the name "Realistic Love". Finally, the love between Mercutio and Romeo is love between friends because even though they are not related, they are still very close friends who care about each other. Mercutio cares a lot about Romeo and vice versa.

It will thus always be relevant for people.

For example in Romeo and Juliet the same dramatic and romantic love is relatable to us even know thus it is timeless.

How did love affect the eventual demise of Romeo and Juliet?

ERIC

I think that both Romeo and Juliet's overly intense love lead to their deaths.

In Romeo and Juliet there was a plan set forth by the Friar so that Romeo and Juliet could run away without their families disturbance. The basic idea was that Juliet would fake her death and Romeo would come get her and escape.

Despite the fact that this was Friar Lawrence's suggestion I believe it is still the fault of Romeo and especially Juliet. It is portrayed again and again throughout the story how dramatic and how in love Romeo and Juliet are. It was also written how they would willingly die than be without the other's love.

It is actually Juliet's love driven craziness that caused for her to almost threaten Friar Lawrence to find a solution because she couldn't stand the pressure anymore. She threatens to kill herself if he doesn't help her, did he have much of a choice? no.

The plan then of course went catastrophically wrong and Romeo, hearing about her death rushed back to Venice. Then he ends up taking his own life when he saw her, then Juliet woke up right then to see it and kills herself too.

In conclusion, I think that it was Romeo and Juliet's love driven craziness that got them killed.

Krishnan: I have heard of shakespeare and Romeo & Juliet before but I have never read it and analysed some of the themes in the play. While I was reading the play I could barely follow it because of the shakespearean text, but as I read on and the story line began to develop I found it really interesting how the theme of love was so well presented. At the beginning of this unit I thought that I would never be able to fully analyse the theme of love and find evidence from the play, I was very confused (mainly because of the difference in language). Now, since we have finished the play it makes more sense to me and it struck me how shakespeare made the sonnet and how the rhyming pattern is so interesting.

How did love affect the eventual demise of Romeo and Juliet?

KRISHNAN

I think that one of the main reasons which caused their deaths was because of the pressure of their relationship. They were both from two feuding families which meant that they should have hated each other, this obviously did not happen as they fell in love in an idealistic relationship.

Another person that I think contributed to the death was also the Friar, as Eric said, he had thought of a plan so that Romeo and Juliet could be reunited by faking Juliet's death so that she would not have to marry Paris. I think it is also purely a matter of fate that Juliet just woke up as soon as Romeo took the poison.

How did love affect the eventual demise of Romeo and Juliet?

AYESHA

Romeo is very naive. I think their deaths were caused by him. He thought Juliet was dead, and his love was so strong for her it drove him to sucide. It is also his fault because he didn't check his mailbox, to find the letter the Friar wrote to him to inform him that Juliet is not actually dead, she is just in a deep sleep. And Romeo has to come for her. But the reason they had to do that was because of their families. There are many causes for Romeo and Juliet's death. But no one is really to blame because it was suicide.

But when Juliet woke up Romeo had realised what he did, and couldn't stop what he had done. When Romeo had died Juliet felt so sad that she didn't know what to do, but then when she saw the gun she felt so bad that they couldn't be together that she shot herself to be with Romeo.
