Its that one thing that I felt like I was born to be a part of. Its the best escape from all the stresses and BS if everyday life. Fun, fitness (body, mind and soul), and friends who become your family. Its where everyone supports each other, encourages and motivates each other, and accepts each other. This sport/club promotes teamwork, growth, respect, and communication. Its something so amazing, you can't really know what its about until you experience it and feel it.

Enjoy this adorable video of me, Christine, and my sister (pink shorts) in skates for the first time. I went up and down that corridor so many times and loved it all. By the way watching that video now, my first thought is LOWER! GET LOW! Use your core!

Roller derby is like this perfect combination for me, indoors and cool, competitive and dangerous, brute effort and tactics, pure fun and joy, welcoming and supportive. Here's to many more videos of my looking like a clutz on skates. <3

This the first personal challenge I have taken in a long time - and it challenges me on so many different levels that I didn't expect but now accept with relish. Roller Derby encompasses the person I am now and will grow with me.

I already wrote something and now I can't see it so I hope that I'm not duplicating it - and I hope I can say it just as good as I said it the first time... this is also meant to be attached to the picture quote from Bonnie D Stroir...
I had never played a sport. I had never had female friends who were fiercely protective of me. I had never done anything in my life where I had to rely on my physical skills and not my mind. Coming in to derby was like discovering a whole new me. I had lived all my life believing I was something only to discover that I was so much more than I believed myself capable of being. With every fall, with every bruise, I discover a strength inside of me that I never knew existed. Not physical - emotional. In the short time that I have been in derby I have become a whole new person - it's scary, but I think I am finding the 'real' me. Derby is life - but I have to remind myself that derby isn't who I am, it's just something that I do. It's far too easy to become dependent on derby to escape the problems of the world!

Derby to me is community. Derby is family. This community is everything, it is the reason I will always love derby. I am astounded how many important people I my life who wouldn’t be there without derby.
Derby is as much an emotional work out as much as a physical one. To have the courage to try and to fail, but to try again anyway. This community helped me to have courage, to try again, to realise that you don’t need to be perfect at something for it to be worthwhile.
