Smart, moral, and fearless are all words that accurately describe Atticus Finch. Many times in the book Atticus is credited to have high education. His occupation as a well-respected lawyer shows that he is very educated. Further, Atticus being a lawyer matches up with his personality because he is someone that is very moral and ethical when making decisions. In the book, he often explains to Jem and Scout his reasoning behind why he says what he says. Early in the novel, when Jem, Scout, and Dill played in the yard of the Radley house Atticus told them it was not ok. He didn’t just tell them no, he explained to them why it was not ok to be on someone else’s property. Lastly, Atticus is a fearless man. In the book it came to Maycomb County by surprise that Atticus took the side of Tom Robinson. Although it was against everyone’s beliefs Atticus Finch stood for what he thought was right. The book takes place in a time where if a black man was accused of something there was no hope for him in the court case. Still, Atticus surprised the county and took the side of Tom Robinson to prove his innocence.

Atticus is a static character who has kept up the same behavior throughout the whole story. From the beginning, he has been a respectable and reasonable man. Atticus was always someone that stands up for what he believes in. When Aunt Alexandra stayed at the Finch’s home she wanted to limit Calpurnia’s influence on Jem and Scout. She wanted Calpurnia to leave the Finch's home for good. When defending what he believed was true Atticus said “Alexandra, Calpurnia’s not leaving this house until she wants to. You may think otherwise, but I couldn’t have got along without her all these years”(Lee, 123). Atticus is one that has stayed alongside the same morals the entire story. He doesn’t change his thoughts based on the influence of the people around him.

Atticus is a man that is very respectful and keeps his interactions very professional. Along with his professional career and interactions, Atticus Finch had a very professional appearance. He is a tall man, has square-cut features, and has salt and pepper hair. Salt and pepper hair means he has black hair that was going gray. When comparing Jem and Atticus’s hair Scout said “contrasting oddly with Atticus’s graying black hair and square-cut features” (Lee, 138). This quote shows that Atticus's' hair is going turning gray. In the book it says that Atticus is relatively older than other father figures.

When talking about perspective, Atticus said “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view” (Lee, 26). This quote defines Atticus’s identity because it shows that he considers all points of view before making decisions. Further, this explains why he is very equal because he considers everyone.

Atticus's role in Maycomb is the lawyer and attorney. He is well known around town for being a tactical and educated lawyer. In the novel, he surprises everyone in the county by defending Tom Robinson, a black male accused of rape. When talking to Scout about the court case, Atticus says “I’m simply defending a Negro—his name’s Tom Robinson” (Lee, 68). Many white folks of Maycomb were surprised and lost their respect for Atticus when he chose to defend a black man. However, Atticus did not change his side. Lastly, Atticus is also a father to Jem and Scout.
