Interest groups are important to American civil society. These are voluntary associations that exist outside the government in any free society. These associations include gardening clubs, local churches, and American Red Cross. Private citizens organize and run these groups. “Interest groups seek  to influence public policy” (McGraw 19,4,2). They do this by lobbying governments, engaging in election activities, and educating many public’s. “Lobbyists work to influence legislators at all levels of government, federal, state, and local” (McGraw 19,4,2). Interest groups help connect the gap between people and the government. Individuals and organizations play a role because because they try to influence the government. These individuals and organizations help make our government a democracy. There are many interest groups such as economical groups (Farmers union), civil rights groups (NAACP),  and public interest groups (NWF). They play a role by providing government officials with facts and data to argue their case. “
Most interest groups do not exist solely to influence public policy. They also have many other goals, including influencing business practices, educating their members and the public, supporting or conducting research, and providing services to people in need” (McGraw 19,3,2). Some interest groups, called public interest groups, focus their work on influencing policies that they believe affect the general public, not just their own members.
