Definition of Linking and do I agree with Ratliff's opinion?

The definition of the musical technique called linking, is music that does not follow "prescribed parameters," instead, music moves in a way that the artist feels suits the piece logically (Ratliff 209). There is no formula it seems when it comes to music, the composer can deicide how they want their piece to flow and what elements would best compliment the idea the compose/artist is trying to convey. Ratliff compares this idea of linking music to the "crystal metaphor," meaning music seems to form "cummulatively developed outward from the center" (Ratliff 209). I agree with Ratliff's metaphor, as music seems to come from an idea that is expanded upon outwardly. There is no mold, for crystals or music.

Ratliff's example vs. my example

From Ratiff's playlist, I chose the "Piano Quintet no. 2, op. 115" by Gabriel Faure as an example of linking. Quintet's are composed with a theme, developement, and recapitulataion. There are several movements and they all seem to flow together and form a cohesive story. The slow third movement shows that the movement is not circling back around, it is moving forward with no imposed form. I chose the song "Csardas Gypsy Dance," performed by David Garrett because I feel that the way he performs this piece, he makes it his own. He slows down parts that arent originally slowed down, makes certain movements more sticcato than how they are in the original, and just makes the song his own version. There is a little bit of form, as it is not his own original song, but he performs it in such a way that makes it seem like he is not following a mold and making it his own.
