The class is working on an independent assignment. Students are working well except for two who are talking. The teacher says, very firmly, "You are supposed to be working by yourself; there shouldn't be any talking." One student mumbles under his breath, and the teacher write his name on the board. The student then curses at the teacher.

A student is out of his seat, walking around the room. The teacher tells him to sit down and do his work. The student says he needs to get something. The teacher says, "sit down or you will be in trouble". The student keeps walking around the room.

Ms. S, a second grade teacher, read about time-out. She decided that she would use it to teach Aaron not to hit other students. She did not have access to a time-out room, but concluded that putting Aaron out in the hall outside the classroom would be just as good. The next time Aaron hit someone, Ms. S told him, "Aaron you hit somebody. You have to go to time-out". She sat him in a chair in the hall and went back to teaching reading.

Roger is a junior. He is consistently late for class, disrupts the class on entry, and is always behind handing in assessment tasks for your subject. His latest assessment task is a month late. When you speak with the AP about his behavior, you find that Roger's behavior appears to be commendable in other subjects. Roger is very sociable with other students.

It is the beginning of class, and you have just handed back the first exam. One student raises his hand and argues that the test questions were not like what they did in class. Now the rest of the students are joining in and complaining that the test wasn't fair, and that you didn't prepare them well enough.

I am going to pull the child to the side and discuss how we do not say bad words in Kindergarten. If you are upset about something then you know you can always discuss this with Mrs. Kelly. I will also let them know that I will have to send a message to their parents about the word they have said. Before it got to this point I would have intervened by saying, " I like the way some of you are following directions and being quiet as you work."

I would tell the students to separate and work elsewhere BEFORE even speaking to them about talking or writing their names on the board.
