Form and Function

The form and the function of a building is a prime fundament when designing something. Louis Sullivan stated that, “all things in nature have shape, that is to say, a form, an outward semblance, that tells us what they are, that distinguishes them from ourselves, and from each other” the form of a building magnetizes the eyes with regards to the exterior form of the building (Kearny, 1989). Additionally, the form commonly gives the first impression that is why it is a significant principle in architecture; on top of that, people are able to grasp the concept and characteristics of the building without having to go inside.

In the other hand, function is an entirely different term. Unlike form, function gives light to the use or the activity that will be held inside architecture, rather than how it looks. Sullivan’s famous axiom, “ form follows function”, became the benchmark for many architects (Glenn, 2004). This conveys that the design should first take in consideration the purpose of the building.

The Nationale Nederlanden building, more commonly known as the “Dancing House”, is one of the most prominent landmarks in Prague. The purpose of the building was to create a place for social and cultural activity, which would embody the hope and liveliness of the era after the Velvet Revolution took place. Now, it is home to almost 3000 square meters of office property, an art gallery, a conference center, and a restaurant where one can also sightsee the magnificent city of Prague. The oddly shaped building is an example of the deconstructivist architectural style. This is based on the fact that the construction has 99 different shaped adjoined façade panels, which forms an unusual structure (Chroustovský, 2015). Although it may seem different from the usual forms, the building still shows harmony towards its surrounding, and most especially to itself. The building shows a redolent of a dancing couple, which Gehry suggests, “a female yin balancing a male yang”. To conclude, the building is shown to be harmonious as a specific component of architecture, as part of a whole, but also as an emblem of a new historical era.
