How do you define the banking concept of education from Paulo Freire. What are its implications?

The banking concept is a strategy that treats students like empty vessels that need to be filled. This assumes that the students know nothing and that the teacher is all-knowing. This limits students’ artistic expression and relies on their memory to retain information.

How do you define race? As a teacher, would you approach this topic in your class? Do you believe in the statement, “I don’t see color, I just see people”? Why/Why not?

Race is compiled of people with similar physical attributes, such as color and facial structure. I would approach this topic in class because marginalized groups, such as African-Americans, Asians, etc., are treated differently by the majority in power, which are white people. It is important to expose students to the reality of the world that they live in so that they may be inspired to change it in the future. I do not believe in the statement “I don’t see color; I just see people” because what makes up a person is reliant on experiences attributed to the color of their skin. By ignoring their physical differences, you also ignore their unique experiences that will enrich students’ understanding of the world.

How would you define gender identity and gender expression? What are the effects of gender identity and gender expression in schools? As a teacher, would you approach these topics?

Gender identity is how someone personally identifies, such as male, female, non-binary, etc., based on how they perceive themselves. Gender expression is how someone expresses themselves with clothes or accessories to make an open statement about their gender. Students that identify with a gender or express themselves in a way that conflicts with how society perceives them can lead to bullying, which would isolate them further. This could lead to the development or worsening of mental health issues and could lead to suicide. I would love to approach this topic in class, but there are limits to what I can share with my students due to the polarity of the political climate. I would make my classroom a safe space for those that feel isolated due to their identity or expression and subtly educate others on the topic by exposing them to different cultures (such as the clothing in Scotland and the robes worn in other countries).
