 I completed Elementary school in Mexico.  In Mexico there was an emphasis on history.    Students were expected to memorize historical events,  names and  contributions of historical figures.  In the United States during ninth grade my Social Studies/History class was offered in Spanish for ELL and newcomers. The type of instruction was very similar to what I experienced in Mexico.
