Researchers in California have come across an innovation to control and monitor hemorrhaging in patients. This sponge is implanted in patients created by, “fibroin,” a protein produced by silkworms to give it its, “biodegradation and anti-inflammatory properties to create […] memory sponge,” that’s highly absorbent (Hastings, 2023). These researchers created this idea because they understand that there are plenty of ways to control external bleeding but not many for internal bleeding besides compression. This innovation not only controls bleeding through absorption but also by applying pressure to the site causing the bleeding to stop. The article then goes on to states that the sponge’s downfall is that it does not alert faculty of bleeding, but they are working on improving the sponge as we speak (Hastings, 2023).

Opinion/Rationale

Hemorrhage control is something that is extremely important and account for “more than 60,000 deaths in the United States and 1.5 million deaths worldwide each year,” (Latif et al., 2023). I believe that this innovation is a good start to become something huge. Once the sponge can alert the patient and healthcare workers when it reaches max capacity of blood intake and somehow can get rid of the blood for purposeful use without the patient having to receive additional surgery to replace the sponge, then the innovation would be complete. To add, we also have to take cost into consideration because the sponge does consist of high grade tools and then we have to also include the placement cost as well. My concern is will those who need this technology be able to truly afford it or what modifications can be done to ensure that many can afford this innovation.

My strengths: Discipline, Achiever, Analytical, Consistency, Responsibility

The Team:

1. Faith- Futuristic

o The futuristic characteristic that Faith brings will make the team think outside the box. Yes, it’s easy to come up with an innovation for the healthcare field but we want to make sure that it stays in use for years to come. Thinking ahead is what gives our innovation longevity.

2. Chloe- Competition

o A team without competitiveness does not stive to be the best. With Chloe on the team, she can rub off on others and push them to get the job down. As a team I would hope that we all would want the same end goal but really cracking down on ourselves and holding each other accountable is what can help the team succeed.

3. Carlee- Consistency

o Carlee is needed because even though I bring consistency to the team, it does not hurt to have more consistent people to get the job done. In addition, two consistent people in addition to other strengths could cut the time of the job being done in half.

4. Chelsea- Command

o Chelsea is someone who has the ability to direct and ensure that the group is on task to greatness. Her strength of command can also be used by creating a outline or deadlines for the group so that procrastination doesn’t get the best of this experiment.

5. Ivan – Intellection

o Ivan would be a great asset to the team because he would open up other members of the group eyes to think more complex and ensure that innovation is up to par for acceptance at all major facilities.
