1 - The Founding of the Ku Klux Klan (1865)

The Ku Klux Klan was founded in Pulaski, Tennessee in 1865 by a group of Confederate veterans after the 13th amendment was intact. They created this group to reverse the Reconstruction laws in the South, which they did not agree with it.

3 - The rise of the KKK (1870)

The KKK spread to almost every southern state 5 years after it was created, in 1870. The group became a huge weapon against the Reconstruction policies favoring political and economic qualities for black people. The members began to engage in violence and intimidation for various institutions for African Americans along with White Republicans.

2 - Grand Wizard (1867)

In 1867, Nathan Bedford Forrest became the first Grand Wizard of the KKK. Forrest was a white supremacist and a former Confederate General. The Klan murders several thousands of people under the Grand Wizard's order.

4 - Klan Act (1871)

In 1871, Congress passed a law regarding the Ku Klux Klan. This allowed the federal government to arrest and punish Klan members. Many members of the Klan disappear and are joined by other white supremacist groups including the Knights of the White Camelia and White Brotherhood.

5 - Revival (1920)

In 1915, white Protestants arranged the revival of the Ku Klux Klan near Atlanta, Georgia. The second generation of the KKK was not only anti-black, but they were against Roman Catholics, immigrants, Catholics, Jews, and organized labour. At this time, the Klan advanced to 4 million people worldwide.

6 - The KKK falls again (1930s)

The Great Depression impacts the Ku Klux Klan by declining in members. The leaders lost their membership ranks. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus tells Jem that at this time the KKK doesn't exist anymore and it'll never come back.

7 - The KKK is back (1960s)

In the 1960s, the KKK expanded again. They bombed 20+ predominately black churches and murdered many civil rights activists. Now, they didn't only attack blacks, but they attacked white people who didn't support segregation.
