I think being authentic involves sharing a part of your identity (Personal, professional) with the students. Let students wonder about visible aspects of your identity as well as the invisible aspects.

Oversharing

Be careful about oversharing. Don't undermine the professional relationship. You can be friendly without being friends. Oversharing can also make you too vulnerable to unfair criticism or make students uncomfortable.

Authentic but composed

I think it is important to perform and be composed. Being authentic is fine in being transparent, but I don't think we should share negativities. Definitely not share our politics.

Being authentic in the classroom means being true to who you are in life and in the classroom. Students see right through us and if you show up authentically, they can feel it and they will trust you. They need to see you as a human, as someone they share experiences with.

It is easy to be empathetic when we have shared experiences. The hard part is when we have NOT shared that experience. Sometimes the other person doesn't need us to share a story like theirs or draw a comparison. Sometimes we just need to acknowledge their experience without making a comparison.

Lawyers

I deal with some departmental policies that I do not support but I respect the choices of my colleagues.

There is a difference between empathy and compassion, in my belief. In empathy we understand and possibly feel the emotions of others, and thus are able to see their perspectives. In compassion we are able to stay neutral and loving in addition to the empathy.

Sometimes it is safer for students to share anonymously how they feel, perhaps in exit cards or short reflective writing.
