 On this #YoungCarersActionDay, 12th March 2025, Cardiff and Vale Regional Partnership Board proudly relaunch the Unpaid Carers Charter for Cardiff and the Vale, reinforcing our commitment to recognising and supporting unpaid carers of all ages. 

With 1 in 10 people in our region providing unpaid care to a loved one, the updated Charter ensures that carers receive the right support, at the right time, in the right place. This update reflects carers’ voices and insights from events like the Cardiff and Vale Unpaid Carers Assembly held on 2nd October 2024.

 What’s in the Charter?

A commitment from NHS, councils & voluntary sector partners to identify, recognise, and support unpaid carers. 

Clear pathways to information, financial guidance, and wellbeing support.

A pledge to improve services, listen to carers, and empower choice.

The aim of the project is to decrease isolation amongst carers, increase awareness, recognition and networking between carers and stakeholders to "normalise the conversation" about the rights, responsibilities and the significant role and contribution to society. Unpaid carers, kinship carers and special guardians in the identified localities will access a program of hybrid workshops that recognise their caring responsibilities by replacing some of the costs incurred to actively participate and share their views, experiences and aspirations towards a more inclusive and co-produced framework that better supports carers in Wales. The project will deliver a series of workshops and networking opportunities across 2 years, which will significantly contribute towards the annual assembly in Cardiff run by, for and with carers and invites stakeholders to discuss, plan and action better practice and support for carers. The annual assembly is now in its third year and has proven to be a successful vehicle for positive change and open discussion. We have excellent connections and working relationships with carer support organisations, strategic operators and a robust and growing membership of carers across Wales and have chosen to focus on the localities identified due to our ongoing work in these areas of high deprivation and need. We will learn and shape future projects by recording, documenting, analysing and reporting on the voices of carers to enable transparent and fluid communication between those voices and decision makers. We will ensure that our opportunities are well advertised, accessible and co-produced and share our findings at all levels to raise awareness of informal care and its value to society. Our methodology has been successfully tried and tested across the last couple of years and we have learnt that the value of hybrid sessions is very much needed within the informal care sector and that carers need support to engage fully.

The project works with local people to develop their knowledge and confidence through our Energy Champions workshop initiative. Energy Champions are given practical energy saving advice and support to pass on this information to friends, relatives and neighbours.

Through Warm Together Cymru, NEA also delivers local energy advice events, providing tailored information and support directly to those most at risk of fuel poverty. In addition, households can benefit from Winter Warmth Support Packs, which include energy-saving tools such as LED lightbulbs, radiator reflectors and draught excluders. 

The project also offers access to a small hardship fund to assist those facing immediate challenges with fuel costs, food bills or warm clothing.

What is it?

The Activity Finder is a free online tool that helps people find local activities to support wellbeing, connection and being active.

Who is it for?

It is for residents, link workers, practitioners and community organisations. Providers can use it to share information about their sessions so people can find and access them more easily.

When is the beta phase?

The beta phase is happening over the coming weeks (27^th April to the 8^th May). This is a testing period where we gather feedback to improve how the system looks, works and feels before a wider launch.

How hard is it to use?

The system is designed to be simple and user-friendly. You do not need technical skills, and support materials will (eventually) be shared to guide you step by step.
