Start the class with a very quick visual check-in by having students draw an emoji on a piece of paper and hold it up to the camera at the same time. Screenshot the picture and share it with the class so they know how their classmates are feeling. You could also compile the screenshots to make a virtual mood scrapbook. Middle schoolers experience a big range of emotions and they can practice checking-in with themselves and sharing out with the class.

It's tempting to blend the flexibility of being home with school and connect from your bed or the couch. It may be comfortable but you're more likely to get distracted by your surroundings if you're not fully engaged in class which means creating a space that's the most similar to your ideal working set-up at school. Teachers should require students to create a workspace at the beginning of the virtual class.

NONEXAMPLE. Students may feel tempted to turn their Camera off during classes, however this may make for an opportunity for students to stop paying attention and thus affect their academic performance. Additionally it prevents from teachers being able to see their reactions to their questions and identifying doubts.

This STRATEGY would allow for students to be able to talk to the teacher about situations or problems that would make them feel self-conscious to mention or discuss in front of peers, the teacher can keep a side chatbox open as a tool. This would facilitate communication directly with the teacher and would allow students to communicate with the teacher, for example if there is something going on, like having to go to the bathroom as they feel sick or similar.

In the classroom, a STRATEGY to help students feel comfortable and able to find ways to explain the way they feel, the teacher could have a few sentences printed and laminated. Every day the teacher would leave a corner of the cork assigned and students can choose some of those sentences that they identify with and pin them, that way the teacher will know if someone is feeling "overwhelmed with work", "happy about what I learned today" etc.

Physical classrooms often have posters that remind us of classroom norms and expectations and virtual learning should be the same. After agreeing upon classroom norms, students should make a visual reminder to put up in their workspace. This can be an assignment at the beginning of the year that also lets students be creative.
