Hinton develops the theme through the use of characters and how they interact with each other throughout the text.  In the beginning of the book Ponyboy got jumped by the Soc's but the other Greasers had his back to help him. In the middle of the book Johnny killed Bob to save Ponyboy and then Ponyboy ran away with Johnny. In the end of the book Darry and Soda go to the hospital to see Ponyboy because they really care about him and want him to be alright. Throughout the book members of the Greasers are always there for each other in important times no matter the situation. She develops theme throughout the setting because no matter where an argument or fight is happening there is always someone there to help out even in a divided town. It was important for them to have each others back in a town where there were 2 groups and they did not get along with each other. She uses the plot to develop theme by adding important moments where the Greasers need some help from each other.  Also, to show how all the Greasers were  like brothers and had a special relationship with each other.
