This set of ethical guidelines is meant to govern, protect, and inform users on how to responsibly navigate and create content for computers and other digital platforms.

Review the resources below to help you ethically comply with the Ten Commandments of Computer Ethics.

Which of the Ten Ethical Computing Guidelines do you think students violate most often?

I think the biggest one is still "not appropriating other people's intellectual output" and "not use resources without authorization or compensation" which broadly means not to plagiarize or steal other people's intellectual property. Whether its from a news article or essay downloaded online, or even bigger implications like stealing the design of something like software or a poster to call their own. Since the internet is such a generous provider of information, as a student I can imagine it's easy to cherry-pick the stuff you need or like without proper citation or attribution.

The easy answer is that computers are insanely powerful, and provide unparalleled access to tools that can provide just about any piece of information about anyone or anything the user wants. This information can be used unethically by fellow users, big tech companies, and even friends on social media in a myriad of different ways. The chief among them is monetization, whether its legally through targeted ads on social media, or illegally through scams like phishing.

I always try to remind people that there's a real live person on the other end of a Twitter or Facebook post, and therefor it's important to be empathetic and consider how your actions affect others and how you would feel if someone maliciously targeted you. No one ever wants to be cursed via tweet, or have there countless hours of research stolen with a quick copy and paste. Before you decide to do anything unethical online or using technology, consider the outcome, and the very real people that are affected by such simple actions.
