Was it ethical to do this study? Was it right to trade the suffering experienced by participants for the knowledge gained by the research? (The experimenters did not take this issue lightly, although the Slide Show may sound somewhat matter-of-fact about the events and experiences that occurred).

To be fair, no one could have anticipate what happened with this experiment, however it was lacking in design and clear protocols for behavior. The way it was designed and unfolded was far from ethical. I personally do not believe it was worth the knowledge gained because the things that occurred could have long term consequences psychologically for the participants.

1. Review the informed consent posted on the website for this study. Does it contain all of the elements for an informed consent? What is missing?
The informed consent for this study was poorly written. Participants were not informed of hoe the experiment would progress, no clear guidelines or protocols, and no clear "exit" strategy if experiment went wrong or became "out of hand." Participants should be given a FULL DISCLOSURE. Consent mentions that participants would have a loss to privacy but NOT humiliation, dehumanization, and harassment. Multiple participants expressed a desire to stop participating during the study but were not aware that they could since the consent only states "Must complete duration of study." There is no clear contact information or invitation to ask questions regarding the study.
There is no clear description of what the goal of the study is, what is being observed, how it will be measured or manipulated. Not included in the study are option to withdraw, noncoercive disclaimer, description of benefits, disclosure of alternatives, and assurance of anonymity and confidentiality. In fact, participants were picked up at their residence, unannounced and arrested in front of neighbors and onlookers without disclaimer.

2.Was this study ethical? Should it have even been approved? Why or why not?
This study was not ethical because it did not have proper informed consent and did not maintain ethical standards of basic human rights. The prisoners were mistreated, harassed, starved, and humiliated. Participants expressed desire to withdraw from the study but felt they could not. Even the professor holding the study states that he found it changing himself and that is why he had to end the experiment.
The experiment should have been planned out better. There should have been built in fail safes, and protocols. The professor should have removed himself from the study and found an unbiased party to perform the role of "warden." Most importantly, there should have been a clear process for participant to exit the study if desired other than "health problems deemed excusable by the professor."
This experiment violated several directives found in the Nuremburg code, often used as a template for human studies. It also ignores the three basic principle outlined in the Belmont Report.

3. What can we learn from this study?
There is much to be learned about design and procedures from this study. Also, as stated before, the importance of maintaining basic human rights. Even the professor holding the study found himself lost in his role and found himself changing. The person holding the study should always be separate from the study and not involved. Clear protocols, design, and informed consent need to be in place and studies such as this should be well planned and thought out.
