The Berlin Wall was a representation of the Cold War (A 20 year quarrel between the United States and the Soviet Union) through a concrete wall and wires that separated Eastern and western Berlin. The wall originated during and after World War II when Germany invaded the soviet union and formed different alliances with France, the United States, England, and the Allied Force. the groups utilized Germany and Berlin into four different groups, which was terrible for the plans Joseph Stalin (The main leader of the Soviet Union) concluded. his plan was to have the Northern, Southern, and Western parts of Germany controlled by the union, and in the end, it contributed to the Cold War. between both groups stood Berlin: ''The city was located 100 miles (160 kilo meters) within East Germany. entry to Berlin required traveling along heavy fortified half of the city''. (Berlin Wall, 2019, para. 5). the Soviets wanted Berlin for themselves but was unsuccessful in removing the military and grew containment in 1949. This made Western Germany more powerful and resulted in a better economy, job opportunities, and a high population count.
Citation: (Berlin Wall-History,Dates,& the Fall, 2009)

Due to excessive travel, Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev (One of the leaders in the Soviet Union), decided to closed the boarder on August 12th 1961. The boarder started off with bar wires, closed railroads, and not permitted to pass by anyone except diplomats. as time went on, the wall became concrete and was between ''12 and 15 feet (3.7 and 4.6 meters) in height. along its length, guardhouses were erected and large chunks of steel were used to prevent vehicles from trying to charge through the wall. Eventually, the East Germans, constructed an area on their side that ran 30 to 100 yards (27 to 91 yards) from the edge of the wall'' (Berlin Wall, 2019, para. 9). Since the boarder was put in force, it became a challenge for people to visit family, run errands, and going to work. The wall also did not stop people from crossing over it without being caught (about 140 to 200 people deceased in attempt to crossing the wall and thousands were able to escape).
Citation:(Berlin Wall-History,Dates,& the Fall, 2009)

28 years later (1989), ''the Soviet Union gradually loosened many of its polices as well as its control over the countries behind the iron curtain [A barrier created by the Soviet Union to prevent the Western areas from spreading Communism]... Hungary (also a soviet satellite state, like east Germany) had opened its boarder, allowing its path for thousands of east Germany to leave for the west. '' (The Berlin Wall as a political symbol, n.d, para. 14). On November 9th, officials announced that the boarder would open since protest occurred stating the acts of Communism. in the end, everyone was able to cross the boards. As of today, Germany would reunify and would become the dominant power in Europe, much as Mrs. Thatcher feared. However, it is also clear that in East Germany reunification has not been as beneficial as hoped. The formerly communist East continues to lag behind the West. Resentments at the disappearance of jobs and financial security the communist regime once afforded have turned ugly, propelling the genuinely frightening return of far-right violence...Walls are not a thing of the past. The democratic optimism ushered in by the end of the Cold War has been significantly tempered. Refugees today continue to flee communist regimes such as North Korea, which has built a border that rivals even the Iron Curtain in brutality and efficiency.
In the United States, the proposal to build a massive border wall has become a major flashpoint in our politics. While building a wall to keep people in certainly reflects worse on a society than building one to keep people out, the idea shares the delusion of the Berlin Wall, which is that force can forever contain human aspirations. (The Rise and Fall of the Berlin Wall and Why it Matters Today,2018, para. 14-16)

Citation:(The Rise and Fall of the Berlin Wall and Why it Matters Today,2018, para. 14-16)
