Phineas Gage was using a tamping iron to pack explosive powder into a hole for the railroad he was working to build. The powder then exploded prematurely which then launched the tamping iron through his left cheek, through the brain and skull, and then out the other side. Some people say that he never even lost consciousness. http://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/phineas-gage-neurosciences-most-famous-patient-11390067/

MRW

Gage received this tamping iron from a local blacksmith. The tamping iron itself had the aerodynamics as a javelin, meaning that it was very sleek. It weighed 13 and a quarter pounds and was measured to be 3 feet and 7 inches long. At the widest point, the rod had a diameter of 1 and quarter inches. Also, the iron had a taper to a point where it entered Gage's skull.

https://goo.gl/nCsWYJ
TN

Phineas Gage, who lived from 1823 to 1860, is one of the most earliest yet most famous documented case of a severe brain injury. Gage is an individual who suffered from personality changes after the trauma. As there was a premature explosion, the tamping iron entered the cranium by easily passing through the anterior lobe of the cerebrum and exiting at the junction of the coronal and sagittal sutures. This fractured the parietal and frontal bone extensively which broke portions of the brain. It also protruded the left eye socket by half its diameter.

https://goo.gl/Izv6B0
TN

(13 years after his accident). This was because of the complications as a result of epileptic convulsions.
https://goo.gl/a2K2Iv
https://goo.gl/tCvKzx
TN

Immediately after the consultation with a local doctor, Phineas was not able to make the clear decisions because the rod directly damaged a part of the frontal lobe. Also, he was not able to think and process information correctly due to the damage. This makes sense because the frontal lobe is where complex decision making is done.

https://goo.gl/xLIa6J
TN

After the rob had entered and exited Phineas Gage's skull and brain he was still conscious and sitting up. He was taken back to where he was living and he was examined by Dr. John Harlow. Harlow had actually stuck his fingers inside of the hole in Gage's head to make sure that fragments of the skull were not lodged into his brain. Even though Harlow cleaned the wound extremely well it had still become infected and Gage fell into a semi-comatose state where his family did not expect him to survive. https://bigpictureeducation.com/brain-case-study-phineas-gage

MRW

Phineas Gage's wound healed very well physically but had permanently damaged his mentality. The damage to the frontal cortex that was done by the rod seemed to have resulted in the loss of sociability. This is difficult to completely backup because the times after Gage's incident are very unclear. https://bigpictureeducation.com/brain-case-study-phineas-gage

MRW
