Why should we know about the act? The Act has saved hundreds of species from extinction and continues to protect and preserve some of our most beloved animals and plants. Today, the Endangered Species Act protects over 2,140 listed species. It is important for our community members to view our exhibit to learn about this event because it has helped to create a better understanding of how human activities can impact the environment and how we can work together to protect it.

Why should we know about the Safe Drinking Water Act? The Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) was established to protect the quality of drinking water in the U.S. This law focuses on all waters actually or potentially designed for drinking use, whether from above-ground or underground sources. The law impacts a lot of people by protecting human health and avoiding the costs related to medical care, productivity loss, and even loss of life. The purpose of this enforcement is simple yet impactful: to protect public health from the toxic effects of the listed contaminants. These community and non-community PWSs serve drinking water to the majority of the population.

The 1987 Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer is a landmark agreement that has successfully reduced the global production, consumption, and emissions of ozone-depleting substances (ODSs). ODSs are also greenhouse gases that contribute to the radiative forcing of climate change. By banning today's new production and use of CFCs, the Montreal Protocol eliminated a significant contributor to climate change, avoiding a potential additional global temperature increase of 0.5 to 1 degree Fahrenheit by 2100. They learned that they could innovate and create better refrigerants that have a lower impact on the environment, in terms of ozone depletion and climate.” The protocol is still the only U.N.

National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) was one of the first laws ever written that establishes the broad national framework for protecting our environment. Its goal is to prevent or eliminate damage to the environment and biosphere and stimulate the health and welfare of man. To further this policy, NEPA requires federal agencies like the NPS to evaluate the environmental impacts of its actions and to involve the public in the decision-making process. Within the NPS the NEPA process is an essential tool for ensuring informed decisions that conserve park resources and values. https://www.nps.gov/subjects/nepa/policy.htm
