Natalie's Carefully Selected Literacy Library by Student S

This collection of books appeals to the interests of my practicum student Natalie. She has a love for computers, animals and pets, school and friends, anything girly, and an interest in the natural workings of our world. Neuman and Dwyer's (2008) guidelines for a developmental approach to selecting literature were used when deciding which books to include in the collection.

Millions of Cats by Wanda Gag is an old fable about an elderly couple. The wife begs her husband for a cat so he takes off in search to find one. The man comes across "millions and trillions of cats"..a line that is repeated throughout the book. He can't decide which one to take so he he brings them all home. They end up telling the cats they are only going to keep the pretties cats. All the cats start fighting over jealousy. Only one skinny cat remains in the grass not fighting because he does not see himself as beautiful. The couple decides to keep the cat, since beauty comes from modesty. This story is so unique, although rather long the language in the story flows beautifully keeping students engaged. When I read it with a small group of preschoolers I was surprised to have everyones attention!

Maybe Something Beautiful by F. Isabel Campoy and Theresa Howell is an inspirational book about a little girl who lives in a city. Over the course of the book the little girl grows into an artist with the world as her canvas. Movement of color and language flows across every page. This story can help young girls visualize themselves as anything they want to be and can promote imagination. The confidence and beauty displayed in this story is worth sharing with any child.

The Worst Best Friend by Alexis O'Neill is a really comical story about two friends named Conrad and Mike. One of the most fascinating aspects of this picturebook is the use of play on words. Words become rhythmic sound in this story and immediately gets children focusing in on the words in the book. This story is also perfect for young school aged children because it discusses common issues such as argument with friends on the playground. This story is so relatable for students, and best of all the literary elements in this book really help to engage its readers.

The book A Bad Case of Stripes by David Shannon immediately interest students due to the rainbow colored little girl on the front cover. This abstract picture grabs the attention of all students. After reading this book once to my preschoolers they wanted me to read it to them again and again and again. This longer read includes eccentric vocabulary such as extraordinary, uncontrollably, contagious, specialists, etc. This story ties student's imagination into school, home, and themselves.

Little Red Riding Hood by Jerry Pinkney is my favorite rendition of this popular children's story. This book has beautiful illustrations that add visuals to very detailed text. Pinkney uses onamonapia to help listeners hear the crunching of the leaves or the falling of the snow. This story will definitely intrigue the imaginative mind of a child!
