As teachers, we are life long learners because information, like standards, change all the time. Through our career we should keep up on our learning through reading books, articles, and the media. While we should be learning through reading, we should be learning about our students. We need to learn about their home life, needs, and how to teach them in an effective way. Students should have equality of opportunity when it comes to learning. According to American Education, equality of opportunity means no matter the economic status of the person, they should have the equal opportunity to enter any occupation they want. Too many children do not get the opportunity to get a higher education to enter the occupation they want because they cannot afford it. Teaching is building a relationship with your students where you want them to succeed at their fullest potential. Students are not hitting their potential because teachers give up on them. When I become a teacher I will include what the book American Education say, "equal footing." So having all my students be on an equal fence as I am a teacher. Pushing this to the next step, I believe teaching is providing your students with options for learning.

Most of the teachers I have had just focus on the subjects and that is all. I feel like coming out of high school I was not prepared for adulthood. Could I solve a science equation? Yes. Could I file my own taxes? No. I felt as if I was set up to fail from high school because I did not know a lot about living on my own. Our American Education book talks about the social justice issues from the start which is something I think teachers should talk about since students will face issues about this. In an urban setting, I know it will be challenging since I do come from a different background then other students. In the article "Toward A Conception of Culturally Responsive Classroom Management," it says that conflicts are very likely when teachers are from different cultural groups then their students. I except this challenge because conflicts are bound to happen but it is about how the conflicts are handled is what matters. We talk a lot about in class how teaching is not an 8-3 job and you are finished. Every morning I want to start off the day in a community circle to set the tone of our day. I will think of my class as one family. I understand that if I work in the urban schools, I will have a harder time connecting with students of different cultures. According to Grossman (1995), "we need to consider when to accommodate students' cultural backgrounds and when to expect students to accommodate." As teachers, we should be collaborating with other teachers to get other ideas. Lets be honest, going into our profession we are not going to know everything which is why we should make it a learning experience for ourselves to get pointers from other teachers. I think educators need to collaborate with administration too with any new ideas they have. Lastly, with our students collaboration should be used EVERYDAY in class. This could be seen when students are doing projects or group work together, or even as easy as using brain breaks to have students collaborate on similarities and differences among their classmates. We can NOT going into the teaching field expecting it to not be political. I think it is important to know what is going on in education politics because in some way it is going to effect us. In the article, Black is Beautiful, it talks about how Black students are targeted. I think as a teacher-activist, we need to be that advocator our students who do not have a voice of their own.
