Mariam's story begins in Herat where she lives in a hut with her mother. Her father wasn't involved in her life very much until the death of her mother. At that time, her father took her into his house. Within the short amount of time she was with her father, they marry her off to an abusive man who lives in Kabul. "Mariam saw clearly how much a woman could tolerate when she was afraid."(98)

Laila's first appearance happens about halfway through the book. She, unlike Mariam, was a rare beauty to society. "They were marveling at the babie's light hair, at her pink cheeks and puckered, rosebud lips, at the slits of jade green eyes" (102). She is raised by both parents but primarily by her father. She and Mariam's stories collide when her parents are killed by a bomb. Laila is taken into Mariam and Rasheed's home, is then married to Rasheed. That's when she and Mariam begin to suffer the abusive qualities of their husband.

The theme, Suffering and Perseverance, is seen throughout the entire book, starting with Mariam at the beginning of the book. She is rejected and unwanted by the people around her. Through Mariam's life she suffers from the loss of her mother and her freedom. She marries an abusive man and loses several children.
We see the theme continue through Laila as she grows through the book. She loses her brothers, best friends and her parents. She marries the same man that Mariam had and they both endure the abuse of their husband.
As their story continues, they go through life together, suffering but also persevering. Although they shared an abusive life, they persevered through it all, making the best out of what they had. They raised two children together, creating unbreakable bonds and a loving family.

This story was heartbreaking to read, especially as women. When reading this book, you get so involved in the characters lives that it almost feels like you experienced their hardships too. This is an amazing but awful story about two women who endured some of the most unimaginable things. This is an amazing book and it shows the different ways people can suffer and yet persevere through it all.
