It depends on how you look at it. To the farmers, he was a hero. He rebelled and eventually saved the farmers who were imprisoned and showed that there were weaknesses in The Articles of Confederation. But from the governments point of view, he was a villain. He led a violent rebellion that could have been peaceful. If he had pursued long enough, the government might have let the farmers go without any deaths. But he chose to go violent, causing multiple people on both sides to perish.
