Malala Yousafzai was born in Pakistan on July 12th, 1997. Welcoming a baby girl often isn't something to celebrate in Pakistan, however her father was determined for his daughter to get every opportunity that a boy would. Yousafzai attended a school for girls that her Dad ran. During 2008, Taliban (a fundamentalist religious group) took over her town, causing her to leave school at 11 years of age. Yousafzai, spoke out publicly on behalf of girls and their right to learn, which took a lot of courage. Sadly, resulting in her becoming a target. In 2012, she was shot on the left side of the head by a masked gunman. Despite this, after her recovery she continued to stand up for what she believed in.

2. How has their work encouraged a more open-minded view rather than a close-minded and controlled view?

Prior to Malala Yousafzai speaking out publicly she began writing an anonymous blog about her life, which went viral. Readers of the blog became more aware of the significance associated with the issue she was addressing. It created more open-minded opinions, yet did not change what was going on in her hometown. When she began speaking out publicly, views of world leaders were altered, and more action was being done to help get girls an education. Later after she recovered from being shot, the United Nation launched a campaign for the education of children worldwide. This led to Pakistan's first right to education bill.

Yousafzai risked her life when she was only 15 years old, to benefit the wellbeing of others. On her way home from school she was shot on the side of the head when a gunman boarded her bus. She spent 10 days in a coma and spent several months recovering. When she woke up from her coma she was told that people around the world were praying for her recovery. Sadly it took this tragedy for people to take notice and believe in what Yousafzai was saying.

3. Compare and contrast their worldview with the worldview they had to deal with?

Both Yousafzai's parents follow the faith of Sunni Muslim. Yousafzai also followed the faith meaning there are certain stereotypes and beliefs in her religion. It's suggested that females from muslim backgrounds are disadvantaged in education in comparison to males. Although her father was supportive of her going to school, many people in her community had different beliefs. The worldview she had to deal with was close minded making it difficult to change. Malala's worldview is reflected in the way she presents herself as an activist for womens rights. She speaks out publicly to help others further understand her cause. During her United Nations Youth speech, Yousafzai refers to god as "The Most Beneficent, The Most Merciful," she then goes on to state "thank you to God for whom we all are equal." It is evident that she has strong religious values and firmly believes that God created all humans as equals. Therefore, she was brought up in a oppressive society where a young girls voice was unable to be heard, simply because of her gender. However, even with all of this, with the support of her forward thinking parents, she found her voice and stood up for what she believed in.

Something I have found most inspiring about Malala Yousafzai is her persistence and her bravery at such a young age. This is evident as although she experienced some tough times in her life she still persisted and to this day is working to get girls an education. This has changed my worldview because I know that I have access to an education and resources I need to learn. It has helped me to be more grateful for what I have, because some girls are not lucky enough to have the same opportunities.
