The Fifth Amendment protects Americans who are suspected of a crime. It protects citizens of double accusing (saying they did it twice.) Court cannot punish someone for the same crime twice. If a person comes t o a verdict of not guilty they cannot ask or do another trial for that person for the same crime. It also protects people from forcing people to be witnesses of their own crimes. You can confess out of your own will but will not be forced. Today police officers have to tell citizens during a arrest that "they have the right to remain silent." (The Miranda Warning)

They have the right to a fair trial, they cannot be kept for a long amount of time in jail (for example 2 months) Trials cannot take place in secret, this means it has to be public and anyone can know about it. People accused of a crime have the right to bring their own witness and question who testify them. The jury also has to be prejudiced against the accused person. Accused people are allowed to hire a lawyer and the government will lend them one if they cannot afford a lawyer.

Court can make people pay money or fines for breaking the law. But it cannot be expensive, for example a parking ticket cannot be $1,000. It also says it forbids excessive bail. But all cases do not have to have a bail. A judge can deny a person who has murdered someone. Court cannot send citizens (not so citizens anymore) to a cruel or unusual punishments. Sometimes Americans find it hard to decide if a punishment is harsh or cruel. Some people agree that a person who murdered someone has to go to death while others do not agree saying that they have to spend their time in prison and make sure they regret what they did.
