Black entertainment television was created in 1908 so that African Americans could see their talents consistently shown. It provides news, entertainment and other shows created specifically for African American viewers. By 1991, it became the first African American company to be listed on the New York stock exchange. Robert L. Johnson is the first black person on the “worlds richest” lists. In 1977, “roots” was the first big tv drama that had a primary black crew and restrain the issue of racism and slavery on prime-time television. It was also the first to capture racial oppressions, lynching in a historical setting. You may be able to catch movies like “roots” or “the color purple” on a historical movie channel but where you would really find it would be on Black entertainment television.
