Why did he write it?

Stevenson was interested in what made up a
person’s character: why they could be bad as well as good. He came from a good family but he was fascinated by the "dregs of humanity", something that the upper class pretended never existed. After a nightmare, Stevenson wrote the story of
Dr. Jekyll in just three days. This is quite significant almost as if he had seen the reality of the Victorian society in his nightmare. This may be caused by the events and experience he had with the people surrounding him. The short period of the time he wrote the book in really projects how passionate and engaging it was for him to write it. Especially him writing the story while he was might portray as if it was his responsibility to leave a piece of hidden mystery in the world which can link to the religious context at the time.

-beginning of 1900sQueen Victoria ruled 1837-1901Britain world’s leading economic and military power controlled a vast empire period of intense changes in many areas (Railroads, postal system, medicine, industry People flocked to cities in search of work1880s poverty began to become a problem changes in traditional society frightened many Britons.
This was definitely one of the contextual detail that dr Jekyll and Mr hyde might have been proposed by. At the time there was a lot of inequality in poverty, belief, and goodness. Most ideas were extreme there was not much grey area for the society to consider. due to the strict and extremist views, there were personalities that are extreme as well. For example, Stevenson perhaps used this extremely to reflect the extreme views of good and evil and perhaps bring them into one character. this links with the id ego and superego this may be the scientific proof behind Stevenson's story. Or Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is an extended metaphor behind the hidden faces of the gentlemen in the society.

Dual Nature/ Split Personality

Many religions use the concept of dual
nature to explain the struggle within a
person to choose between good and evil.
(Adam/Eve; Cain/Abel)
Horror and gangster films and fiction
often explore the dual nature of a
criminal by showing an evil person
performing an act of kindness. For
For example, in the film The Godfather the
gangster hero is shown playing with
children and interacting with family and
friends.
Duality and the split in personality are also one of the many key themes in dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Contextually this idea may have been the reflection of Stevenson and how the evilness in this book perhaps puts light upon Stevenson's inner self and his secrecy. The fact the idea came through a nightmare may have just been a coverup for the nightmare he suffered through his life to keep his evil desires within him. All the acts that are portrayed within the book may have been ideas that Stevenson is interested in and wanted to pursue in his life however he had to respect his prosperity and the society and therefore may have written a book about it.
