Before we teach children ground rules, we need to ensure that we establish some simple basic ground rules. Children need to know what is expected of them and these simple basic rules should be easy for them to understand. We can use role play to teach ground rules by getting children to act out the different scenarios. The ground rules can be shared repeatedly to let the children listen and hear the ground rules. The teacher can start off her lesson each day with the sharing of ground rules. For the older classes, we can also use discussions to let the children discuss about the rules for better understanding. This way, they can contribute to the different rules and share about what they think can be included to the ground rules.

Consistency is important while shaping behaviours as it helps the children gain trust and confidence in caregivers who are consistent in setting rules and regulations. Children will feel secure and confident through the caregivers' love and warmth. It also encourages appropriate behaviour amongst children.

Ground rules should be established at the beginning of a lesson/session, and the teacher/educarer should explain the purpose they serve. Consistency is key in shaping behaviours as that will give the children the idea that that is what they are supposed to do on a daily basis so in future, they are able to automatically do what they are supposed to do as that will actually be embedded in their minds.
