How can I summarize in few minutes our dear Rabbi Pinchas Shmuel Laderman and my wonderful and exciting life with him?

In all his years, until his last days, Paul was always very eager to study and teach Torah every day – therefor it is appropriate that I start with a Torah quotation and its matching short story:

Parshas Vyelech is the portion of the Torah we read at the end of the Torah cycle just before Rosh Hashanah. There we read that G-d says to Moshe:
"You are about to die" and "you will not cross this Jordan"

Paul, throughout his life repeatedly told me how grateful we should be that we were given the privilege denied to Moshe our great leader. That in our generation each one of us could (before the Corona and hopefully soon again) board a plane and come to the Land of Israel .

In connection to this he recounted his first trip to Israel in 1948. Due to that his dad Rabbi Manuel Laderman who was sent by the JDC as an envoy to help Holocaust survivors still living in various European countries. The family lived in Paris and for Passover flew to Israel to spend the holiday there., Paul aged 14 was thrilled to be in Israel. He waited for his parents to go to sleep and left the hotel to explore the Hebrew city he was so thrilled to visit.
He walked enthusiastically through the city streets until he got tired and wanted to retrace his steps but could not remember where the hotel was or even its name. Not having a cell phone and being totally lost Paul sat down on a bench on Rothschild Avenue and began to cry. A policeman approached him and said " why are you crying" and when Paul answered him in English: I AM LOST! the policeman answered
YOU ARE NOT LOST YOU ARE HOME
He then helped him get to the hotel that was probably the only hotel in Tel Aviv at the time
For Paul this experience and the policeman's words YOU ARE NOT LOST YOU ARE HOME stayed with him till he actually made Israel his home coming to live here in 1973 .
How did we meet? I met Paul when I arrived from Jerusalem to New York . Believe it or not, we actually met in busiest place in this world. I had a date with Yaakov an Israeli friend who was studying in NY and who wanted to show me the sights of the big city. But due to an invitation he received from Paul to come to a party at his sister Mierle's Collage the program changed and we were meeting Paul in a cafeteria inTime Square. There was a misunderstanding about the place and all three of us walked out of where we were waiting and met on Time Square
Paul and I were wedded a year and a half later, and had a wonderful marriage that lasted 55 great years of joyous life and a most delightful family BH of children, grandchildren and great grandchildren who are with us in this moving memorial for our Sabba Paul.
Born in 1934 in Denver Colorado Paul
was ordained as a rabbi in 1960 the year we were married.
Our life together was a great and very meaningful journey full of interesting content and challenging experiences. It took place in different and exciting intersections where we experienced much Jewish activity and community action both in the United States and in Israel.

Paul, who started his Jewish studies in Chicago at the Yeshiva and university there later transferred to Yeshiva University in New York and was ordained there as a rabbi by the late Rabbi Yosef Dov Solievetchik.
Paul served as a military Chaplain in the U.S. Air Force, and later as a synagogue Rabbi in Beit Yaakov synagogue in Oakland. In 1970. He was appointed rabbi of the Hillel house at the University of California on the Berkeley campus in the most turbulent years among the students in the USA . Paul was indeed the right man for the Job. Paul was able to inspire the students with his open Jewish mind and ideology.

In 1973, just before the Yom Kippur war , we immigrated to Israel and to Jerusalem where we lived happily ever since.
Throughout his years, Paul was involved in instilling the values of Judaism, Zionism and Democratic ideas in various organizations. He worked for the Association of Community Centers -the Matnas organization, for the American organization that assisted in the absorption of Ethiopian immigrants in Israel and in the IDF Education Corps as part of his military service.
Wanting to give young couples a valued bond in their married life he conducted 1,300 wedding ceremonies all over the country, mostly for non observant couples. He met them once or twice before the ceremony discussing with them the challenge and the beauty of building a strong loving home .
He did it all with an open mind, a great smile, and a loving and accepting Jewish spirit.
Paul believed in the Return to Zion as part of the process of redemption. He was a lover of peace and a pursuer of tolerance acceptance and openness at home and abroad.

Avia:Dear and beloved Saba,Look how I grew up. I'm already 14 years old in 9th grade. I study at the Bnei Akiva "Amana" school in Kfar Saba. I dance, participate in the "workshop" team at the Raanana Dance Center. I remember you saw me dancing, many years ago. Last year, Savta came to watch my show at Yad Labanim. I believe that you also watched me, from above. How happy I was to receive from you a loving grandfatherly hug after the show and for you to say "How amazing you were! AMAZING!"Saba would always explain and teach me new things, on any subject. With a lot of patience. In our Soos day summer camps in particular. You enjoyed when we were all in your and Savta’s house. I remember in the summer camp on the subject of the "Crusaders", I was very small, but you agreed that I would join the big kids. Savta showed a presentation that really scared me.At the summer camp, everyone asked questions, but I especially asked many tedious questions. You had the patience to answer every question and question. You have not lost an opportunity to give us your wisdom and knowledge.I also benefited from personal Sus summer camps, that included a traditional visit to the Science Museum. Saba really enjoyed going upstairs at the museum with me to play all the amusements and games, like putting together puzzles. And there were also shared treats - like cornflakes with milk and pieces of fruit. Saba was a peach and nectarine cutter. Or my birthday celebration at the summer camp, at an Italian restaurant in the Saint-Simon neighborhood. Or when we had a family Shabbat at the Knights' Hostel in Acre and while everyone was going to rest, you and Savta invited me to your game room. You also educated us to keep mizvot: daily prayer; Shabbat meals and kiddushim; Looking at you and Abba from the women section in the Armon Hanaziv synagogue; Your promise of a reward for those who complete the entire Omer count with a blessing (Abba still owes me for the past year).I love you Saba and will always love you. I still adore you for who you were as a grandfather, as a family head, as an educational figure of endless patience and forbearance.I miss you very much, Aviaאביה:סבא היקר והאהוב,תראה איך גדלתי. AMAZING!"

Hello everyone,
When Savta asked me to write a short shiur in English, I had no idea what I was going to write about. Nothing. The obvious thing for me, as the grandson of Rabbi Paul Laderman, was to ask Saba for some guidance and help with my shiur. How ironic is that? So, I’ve decided to look around for something that stands out and found it in the last two versus of this week’s Haftara.
In a few hours we will welcome Shabbat Shuva. The last two versus from the Haftara are:
You will have plenty to eat, until you are full, and you will praise the name of the LORD your God, who has worked wonders for you; never again will my people be shamed.
Then you will know that I am in Israel, that I am the LORD your God, and that there is no other; never again will my people be shamed.

These two versus are at the end of the Haftara, in a section that discusses the blowing of the Shofar in Zion. But reading these versus gave me a strong sense of Saba. I feel as if different sections in these verses describe the spirit of Saba’s values and life.
You will have plenty to eat, until you are full, and you will praise the name of the LORD your God…
We all remember great meals, with extraordinary friends and/or near and/or far family with Saba Paul and Savta Shula. For me, the majority of those took place in the apartment with the best view in Jerusalem, that Saba loved so much. All of them ending in a beautiful Birkat HaMazon with Saba singing beautifully out of tune. Some of us had the pleasure of getaway non-macrobiotic steak or hamburger meals on occasion whenever an opportunity presented itself.
who has worked wonders for you…
Saba, driven by his devotion to God, achieved incredible feats, acquired countless friends, found great love and raised a beautiful family and later grandchildren in Jerusalem. He would have loved to meet the next generation with the arrival of Meshi into our lives.

…never again will my people be shamed.
This is easy. Saba always smiled. Even when he didn’t wasn’t smiling, he had a happy face on.

Then you will know that I am in Israel, that I am the LORD your God…
Saba was a true Zionist who felt the presence of God in our small nation. Anyone who was led by Saba on a tour around the apartment overlooking Half of the Judean desert and the old city, could hear and feel it. He enjoyed seeing his children and grandchildren going to school, serving and even marrying and expanding in our home Israel.

never again will my people be shamed
And just to make sure, an end with us never being shamed, but being happy and joyful. If it not for his joyfulness, I would have never finished “99 bottles of beer on the wall”. Saba could.

For this coming year. I wish for all of us to remember the joy and happiness Saba projected everywhere, in all directions. And invite those in lockdown/quarantine to start (and finish) 99 bottles of beer on the wall.

Shana Tova everybody,
Eitan

During Yom Kippur prayers, we say "Our Father, our King - we have returned in complete repentance before you." It is clear to us why we want to "repent", but why do we want to "repent completely"?
Anyone who tries to change a bad habit (smoking, diet) knows that making an partual repentance is also a very difficult task. Why not pray for any level of response, even if it is partial?
Our sages teach us a wonderful and profound idea about the process of repentance:
"Rish Lakish argues (based on the passage in Hoshea 14:2) that teshuvah changes zedonot – sinful acts done on purpose – to shegagot – acts done by accident.
The first part of the words of Rish Lakish, one of the greatest Teshuvahs, makes a lot of sense.
Repentance is indeed capable of turning sin into an inadvertent act.
The halakhic definition of inadvertent is not a "mistake", but a
"deliberate act" which is done in the absence of knowledge.

The repentant proves retroactively that when he sinned he had a certain lack of knowledge. Had he then, at the time of sin, had the same insights that he has today, being a penitent, he would not have committed the sin in the first place. Therefore, in his answer he proves that all his sins are merely inadvertent.
However, the second part of Rish Lakish's words is puzzling. How can repentance make every sin a merit and a mitzvah? There is even a certain danger in this statement, since a person may, God forbid, think that he can spend his youth in sin, return later in repentance "from love" and in any case, all those years will not be lost because If you consider a mitzvah. How?
Why should the sinner be rewarded for his sins?

Rabbi Solovitchik gives a wonderful explanation of Rish Lakish's remarks. The first answer, a fearful repentance, is an repentance of repetition. In the process of repentance, the sinner returns to the starting point where he stood before the path of sin.
Man represses and suffocates his passions, and is thus able to forget the unnecessary years of sin and repent.
Admittedly, there is a deeper way of repentance- not an repentance of repetition but a repentance of progress. This repentance does not require man to erase the past and forget the sin. It is precisely in the memory of sin that there is a certain power. If a person is able to harness the energies he has revealed within himself during the years of sin, and repent for them, for the sake of holiness, he reaches the level of "repentance from love."
The sins and failures of the past become a source of holiness, as man uses the powers and energies he has discovered within sin, for the benefit of holiness. Which therefore, every sin becomes turns into credit.

In modern poetry, Avi Ohayon wrote a song, performed by Omar Adam "I thank every morning" and the last stanza says: "For all my failures I thank, for my disappointments my fears and obstacles, they are all in my favor, there is no one else in my heart, only you I thank."
We are referring to such an answer in our saying: "Our Father, our King - we have returned in complete repentance before you."
